It's a beautiful day to announce our opening date and get hyped about our FOOD HALL! Get ready and mark your calendars for this Monday, April 5th, when we open for take-out to the public! Although our opening looks different than we initially imagined pre-COVID, we are so proud of the businesses, community/build partners, and staff for preparing us to launch @lacocinasf's most significant milestone yet-- opening the nation's first women-led food hall. We're committed to servi...ng you delicious food from 6 La-Cocina born businesses and making this a project that serves as an innovative model for anti-gentrification, conscious community-led development, and a safe space for marginalized populations. Thank you, Janelle Bitker and Chronicle Food, for the lovely feature announcing our opening. Have a read to hear from Chef Lupe of Mi Morena SF, Chef Tiffany of Boug Cali, and our Municipal Marketplace Manager, Jay Foster. https://www.sfchronicle.com//La-Cocina-s-massive-multicult

The Tenderloin like working-class neighborhoods across our city, region and country deserves safe, affordable, vibrant, warm and welcoming spaces that prioritize the needs of existing residents. Children need safe places to play, study and explore. Working-class adults deserve access to good jobs. All residents deserve delicious, nourishing, affordable food. We believe the Marketplace can deliver on those objectives, but we'd never be in a position to do so were it not f...or the collective efforts of the community. Tenderloin Community Benefit District has long been advocating tenaciously and effectively for these very things. Urban Alchemy - UA has been a city-wide leader in creating safe and vibrant spaces, which we learned first hand when we partnered with them on mid-Market for a food truck pilot. UC Hastings Law has invested in safe spaces and done so in partnership with the community. The vision for the Marketplace was born out of the work Tenderloin Housing Clinic, Central City SRO Collaborative, and La Voz Latina had and have been doing on the Hyde St. corridor. We’re grateful for the continuous support of the Mayor’s Office, Matt Haney and San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD), and for the tireless work of Damian Morfett and his team featured in Heather Knight's important piece. When we think about our work and role here, we think about demonstrating what our city can and should be capable of accomplishing. Building and opening resident-facing amenities that create economic opportunity for all and executing public space improvements, like the Turk Street/Safe Passage linear park while investing in community safety through partnerships with Urban Alchemy that are holistic. This is what we believe cities should be doing across this country. Economic inequality is a policy choice, and creating spaces that push against that trend is ever-more essential. Especially now. It is work all of these organizations and residents have been doing, and that we could not do without our collective partnership. It represents the hustle, tenacity, talent and beauty of the Tenderloin we all know. :: Nick Otto #tenderloinsf #tltogether #communityfirst #wearelacocina #smallbusinesssupport #sanfrancisco

Appreciate Monica Burton + Eater for this piece featuring the La Cocina Municipal Marketplace. Thanks to so many amazing people + partners, Marketplace construction was complete in October. We’re working on how to operate and open the space during a pandemic, prioritizing the health + safety of our entrepreneurs and the Tenderloin community we’ll serve. It’s a scary + complicated time without large-scale assistance or a clear path to opening on a federal level. For now, w...e hope to activate the space early next year with La Cocina businesses providing take-out and delivery and to prepare meals for local food insecurity programs. https://www.eater.com//restaurant-dreams-deferred-covid-19 [Image description: An illustration of two people walking by a closed restaurant front with the headline The Year the Restaurant World Put Its Dreams on Hold by Monica Burton.]

You've seen outdoor dining shut down in the Bay Area 'til January- another setback for restaurants who have re-hired staff and invested tens of thousands of dollars in creating outdoor spaces to generate sales in a pandemic. While community health/safety is paramount, it's a scary time for small businesses without large-scale assistance or a clear path to opening on a federal level. Without meaningful attention to this economic crisis, we'll see the people who have been runni...ng these industries in a vulnerable position for so long bear the brunt of that impact. With your support these past 9 months, we've been able to protect and strengthen our businesses by disbursing nearly $800K in financial assistance, supporting 23 restaurant owners in renegotiating leases, waiving $90K in kitchen fees, and generating $1.5MM for businesses via our Community Food Box/food insecurity partnerships. Watch what you’ve made possible this year and consider donating today! Our businesses need your support to help weather this storm and brace for it's lasting economic impact. REPOST from @remirosez / We want to give a HUGE shout out to La Cocina volunteer, advocate and friend Remi Zimmerman Remi has been a volunteer at La Cocina and a mentor for @pinkyandreds for a little over a year. Recently with the support of her community, she started a successful #PastaFund to benefit our organization during this challenging time. Recently, she partnered with the co-founder of @lona_project another La Cocina partner and advocate, to sweeten her #PastaFu...nd deal and add baked goods to the sale. Over the past couple of weeks, Remi’s #PastaFund raised over $2000 for our Emergency Relief Fund Thank you, Remi, for being so generous, and showing up for our entrepreneurs. We are so grateful that you’ve decided to join us in this fight to amplify the voices of the talented women in our community and create a more delicious and equitable food industry #WomenSupportingWomen #CommunitySupportingCommunity #WeAreLaCocina #PowerOfPasta - Even in challenging times, we can all come together to support our community with a little magic and pasta This week we raised over $1,000 for @lacocinasf The power of community is undeniable and I’m truly grateful to all of you for ordering the pasta and dessert packs to support this remarkable organization! Thank you Amy from @lona_project for generously donating the beautiful desserts and to my sous chef @broccolirob725 for helping me make over 40lbs of pasta. It means the world that in this difficult time you have chosen to support @lacocinasf an organization that supports women-owned food businesses in the Bay Area and amplifies the voices of women from around the world that have channeled their passion for cooking to pursue economic freedom.
