We're taking a closer look at the life and works of Mildred Blount (1907-1974), a milliner both for popular Hollywood movies and for private clientele at her Beverly Hills hat shop. Blount was the first person of color hired at the famous millinery company John Frederics. During her time there, she designed and created the hats seen in "Gone with the Wind (1939)," although she was not credited for her work. Once she started working under her own label, she continued to crea...te hats for films, including 1941's "Back Street," and for a growing list of celebrity clients. Her strong designs and excellent millinery skills earned her a membership to the Motion Pictures Costumers Union, where she was the first Black person, male or female, to be admitted. Lauded in her own time as "famous," "internationally known," and a "leader in her field" it is shocking that Blount has faded into obscurity. Read more about her incredible life (and of course, see more of her amazing designs) on the blog:

To create his miniature work Portraits: An Exhibition in Tif Sigfrids’ Ear," artist Joe Sola had to invent a tool to apply the paint, for even the tip of an eyelash was too large. His solution was to meticulously file down a .12mm acupuncture needle with an emery cloth to the most minute tip and then use it to apply the paint under a microscope. Learn more about how this minuscule masterpiece came to be, and how it was installed in " NOT I: Throwing Voices (1500 BCE2020 CE)" from Daniel Wheeler, Senior Art Preparator.

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. ...To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known. -Carl Sagan...
