Kesean Neighbors is an LABWC member, Ready to Work graduate, and testament to Black History in the making! Like many Black workers, Kesean experienced generational barriers to securing a good job. With a baby on the way, he just wanted a way to provide for his family, but felt as though he was drifting through life without direction, or knowing what to do. He’d attended job fairs and sought opportunity after opportunity, but he continually experienced the systemic exclusion ...of Black workers from sustainable labor markets. When, by chance, he came across the Los Angeles Black Worker Center, Kesean said he saw people laughing, happy, and exuding positive energy by just talking about work, and knew this was where he needed and wanted to be. He went through the Ready to Work pre-apprenticeship program in hopes of finding a career, and recalls experiencing love from the very beginning, like this program was different, and he was going to be ok. Kesean is now a member of the @so_cal_union_painters, and has used his experience to uplift Black workers by sharing his story and volunteering in spaces that seek to eliminate disparate labor practices. It is the mission of the United Way of Greater Los Angeles to fight poverty by standing with Angelenos, just like Kesean, on their path to economic mobility! Kesean is the latest example of Black History in the making and we are uplifted by his courage, dedication, and commitment to building communities that THRIVE. As a member-led organization, these are the stories that empower us to take our work to the next level! JOB OPPORTUNITY: The Los Angeles Department of Mental Health (DMH) is hiring for part-time, up to 30 hours per week outreach workers who understand Black culture and can help destigmatize mental health in our community. Pay starts at $15.38 per hour with a minimum of 4 hours per week. DMH would like to recruit 50 Black Health Promoters by the end of December 2020. Today, on the first day of Black Empowerment Week, we're uplifting Black History in the making! Sherri Bell is a Los Angeles native who fights for equity and radical change throughout California. After personally experiencing the devastating impacts of the Black jobs crisis by not being able to secure sustainable employment, she became a member of the Los Angeles Black Worker Center and successfully organized to raise the minimum wage, demand accountability for wage theft, a...nd prevent employers from disqualifying job applicants simply because they have a past conviction. In Sherri's words: "We [the Los Angeles Black Worker Center] are an outlet challenging unfair, systemic conditions imposed on Black workers at a higher rate. Our work is important because there aren't many, if any, entities or forces fighting specifically for Black workers to have basic human rights and provide for their families with a fair wage. The BWC provides an opportunity to exercise power that ensures equitable and fair representation." Sherri is also a board member that uplifts the critical nature of the LABWC's leadership development program and prides herself on being able to support her community. "Being on the board is just a part of my own leadership development and allows me to lend a hand organizationally. Being a member since 2012, it's important that I take everything I've learned, all of my training, all of my mentorship, and use it at a higher level."
