Meet our newest Touchstone Athletes, Malcolm and Pierre Alcutt! They both come from 8+ years of indoor trampoline experience, which they say helps a ton for their general fitness base and body awareness. After years of bouncing and tumbling, the two brothers found a new challenge in climbing and a new community in their home gym, Diablo Rock. Climbing is just like a more grown-up version of what we were already doing, Pierre says. A self-identified boulderer, Malcolm oft...en runs out of projects in the cave & Kilter Board. I love how each climb is a puzzle to be solved both physically and mentally, he says, and how each climber’s strengths and weaknesses often allows them to unlock the same puzzle, but in different ways. While Pierre can often be found quietly scrolling through his Instagram feed (or respectfully avoiding yet another lap on your project), don’t let his modesty fool youhe’s got incredible determination and laser-like focus. But climbing is about more than sending the gnar for him: It’s the best excuse to be outside, discover a different view and perspective of nature, and spend time with my brother. On top of putting down big numbers in the gym, they’ve also both just recently done Ill Cave (V10) in Tahoeafter only 1.5 years of climbing. We can’t wait to see what they do next. Say hello to these crushers out at the rocks or in our gyms when they reopen! : Steve Babuljak

Reopening in June certainly has been a whirlwind! While we won’t be able to host an after hours drag bingo blow out this year () we still want to celebrate PRIDE with our community! There's a lot going on and everything will be happening on July 10th, 11th, and 12th, so mark your calendars and get ready! Come to the gym sporting your most fabulous PRIDE gear (flags, pins, shirts, head-to-toe body paint, whatever!) and for every person who participates across all four SoCal... gyms, we’re going to donate $3 to Unique Woman's Coalition (@theuwcofficial), a local organization whose mission is to foster the next generation of black trans leadership from within community through mentorship, scholarship, and community care engagement work! Looking for holds for your home wall or DIY training board? We’re having a hold sale where all proceeds go to (you guessed it) UWC! But that’s not all! Check out the silent auction items at your home gym and bid on some sweet new gear knowing your money is going directly to this amazing local organization! And finally, show us your pride on social media! Post a picture of yourself wearing your pride gear in the gym and tag (@) us to be entered into a raffle! Whew! So many ways to participate, and you’ve got some time to prep your pride realness lewks, so in the mean time, head to theuwc.org to check out what they do for LA’s LGBTQ+ community! See more

LA Boulders 19.07.2020

When we say climbing is for everyone, we are taking a stance. We are saying that we believe in everyone’s right to access to our sportand that we know we haven’t gotten there yet. Access is not about opening our doors and expecting people to walk through. It is about recognizing the barriers to entry and working to take them down. And there is no greater barrier than being denied your basic humanity. Black people in America can’t expect to feel safe jogging in their neig...hborhoods, buying candy from a corner store, holding cellphones in public, or even relaxing in their own homeshow could we expect them to feel safe rock climbing? To our Black community: We stand with you. We recognize our role in creating a more just society, starting with our gyms. We are reiterating our commitment to do better. We will continue to do the work within Touchstone to cultivate social equity at every level, from hiring practices to employee trainings and staff support. We will continue to work with organizations and support local leadership who fight for equity and access to rock climbing, both indoors and out, for all. We hope everyone in the Touchstone family feels empowered to speak out in this painful moment. It can be hard to know what you can do to fight systemic racism as an individual. It feels scary and impossible to change a system, but it CAN be changed. Here are ways that you (yes, YOU) can fight racism today: VOTE. Laws are made by lawmakers. You choose who those lawmakers are. https://registertovote.ca.gov/ Support Black-owned businesses https://bit.ly/supportBlackbizLA Support on-the-ground activist groups https://bit.ly/supportactivists

Dear Touchstone Climbing Community, After much difficult deliberation we have decided to temporarily close all Touchstone gyms tomorrow, March 16th, and remain closed through the end of March. In times of crisis, we turn to family, friends, and the things that ground us. The gym is all of that to us. It had been our hope to provide a place where we can prioritize our health when we all need it most, but it is clear that we must now take drastic action to combat the COVID-19 ...pandemic. We plan to continue to pay our front desk staff and routesetters during this closure. We ask those of you who are financially able to stick with us in these difficult times to continue your memberships. This support will not go unrecognized; we are already brainstorming a cool way to thank you when this crisis is over. If you are unable to maintain your membership, we understandall freezes through March will be free, and we will issue a credit through the remainder of the month to those who request it through this online form: https://touchstoneclimbing.com/my-account/ Please be patient while we process your request. We will be reassessing the situation daily. While the details may change, these are our current goals: * For the next two days, Monday and Tuesday, we will have a person on staff at the gym during normal business hours whom you can call with questions. * Starting Wednesday, March 18th, we will have a person on staff 10a6p. * During this time we will deep clean the gyms and equipment. *We aim to reopen April 1st. Throughout all of this, we have been overwhelmed by your support, patience, and understanding. Your response has been a bright light amid these uncertain times. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being a part of our community. Best, Touchstone Climbing

LA Boulders 24.04.2020

After carefully considering our responsibility to customer and employee safety, we have decided to temporarily suspend nonmember access to all Touchstone gyms starting Saturday, March 14. (This includes member guest pass users.) We are also canceling all group yoga and fitness classes. Given current state and federal guidelines, as well as recommendations by experts in the field, we recognize that our goal is no longer containment of COVID-19, but mitigation. We are doing ou...r part to flatten the curve by enacting practices that spread out the likelihood of exposure over time, thus avoiding overwhelming our healthcare providers and putting us in a better position to manage our broader response to the pandemic. It is our belief that we can continue to provide an important service to the health and wellbeing of our members through conditionally and carefully maintained operations. Gym hours and member access will remain unchanged, and we are working on streaming online yoga classes from some of your favorite instructors starting next week. For those of you who would like to continue using the gyms, we remind you to please follow the Center for Disease Control guidelines: * Please don’t come to the gym if you are ill, for at least a week after becoming ill, and a minimum of 24 hours after fever and symptoms have gone away. * When you cough or sneeze, always turn away from other people and be sure to cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or use the inside of your elbow. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. * Wash your hands often with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. * Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Everyone at Touchstone has been working around the clock to respond to the rapidly changing developments of this public health crisis. Responding to COVID-19 requires diligence and flexibility on all of our parts. Policies may continue to change as we get more information. Thank you for your understanding in these trying times; most of all, thank you for being a part of our community.

LA Boulders 09.04.2020

Until further notice, we are temporarily not lending yoga mats and props from the yoga room. Please bring your own yoga mats and props to class. LA Boulders 17.07.2019

Week 3 of the @accessfund #insideout challenge! This week we discuss two of the most popular topics in climbing POOP... Everybody does it. Learn how to do it right. Human waste can contaminate water sources, spread disease, ruin other people’s experience, and raise the alarm of land managers. Different climbing areas require differing methods for human waste disposal, depending on the environment, local rules, and regulations. -Use toilets whenever possible, even if you have to hike a bit further. -Keep a few waste disposal bags in your pack for emergencies. -In popular, high-use areas don’t dig a hole. Pack it out in your waste disposal bag. -In remote forested areas where it is appropriate to use a cat hole, dig a hole 8" deep by 4" wide and bury only natural toilet paper. -Always pack it out in a bag in desert and alpine climbing areas. Both soils lack the microorganisms to break down human waste. -Whether you’re going #1 or #2, move at least 200 feet away from water sources before doing your business. CHALK Cliffs or boulders covered in chalk leave behind visual evidence that climbers were there. This visual impact can be a deal breaker for many land managers and other recreationalists. Over the years, chalk also gets caked onto holds, forming layers that change the texture of the rock and the friction of that very poor sloper. Too many ticks can also cause confusion on a route, botch on-sight attempts, and ruin the self-discovery and problem-solving that many climbers love. -Clean up any chalk spills. -Brush off tick marks after each session. -Choose the right brush type for the rock: soft brushes like boar’s hair are best on desert sandstone and other soft rock types; nylon brushes are best for hard rock types such as granite. -Don’t use chalk to dry wet holds - it just makes them harder to dry! -Check regulations before visiting a new climbing area. Some areas don’t allow chalk usage or dictate the color climbers can use. -Work with your local climbing organization to initiate a chalk cleanup day at your local climbing area. #accessfund #loveyourcrags #insideoutchallenge #touchstoneclimbing

LA Boulders 22.05.2019

Week 2 of the @accessfund #insideout challenge! Our climbing areas are being loved to death. Access Fund is working with local climbing organizations across the country to address the problem with support from land managers, grants, and a whole lot of sweat. Climbers are building retaining walls, beefing up belay bases, installing port-a-potties at trailheads, and creating new trails that will last for decades. But the number of deteriorating crags is growing every day, whi...le the number of volunteers and the funding to support them remain too scarce. Recruiting help for these projectsin the form of money or laboris sometimes made more difficult by the fact that many climbers don’t recognize the problem as a problem and, sometimes, don’t recognize the solution as a solution. How You Can Help... Notice the impacts: The first step to fixing the problem is recognizing the problem exists. When you’re out at the crag, pay attention to the conditions around you. Are there exposed tree roots? How much plant life is around? How sloped is the base? Are your feet slipping on the dirt and disturbing the soil? These are signs that climbing is taking a toll. Limit your impact: Now that you see the problem, work to keep it from getting worse. Put your gear close to the wall and move the belay closer in, not farther away from the cliff. Stay on the trail if there is one, or try to step on rocks and other durable surfaces. Get involved: Step up with your back, your wallet, or both. Keep your eyes open for volunteer opportunities with your local climbing organization or with Access Fund-Jeep Conservation Teams. If you have financial resources, please consider donating to Access Fund or your local climbing organization. Adequate funding is a critical part of making these projects successful. Use your voice: One of Access Fund and local climbing organizations biggest challenges is getting approval from land managers to tackle stewardship. You can help by telling land managers that you support streamlined approval processes for partners. #accessfund #loveyourcrag

Week 1 of the @accessfund #insideout challenge! Climbing is exploding in popularity. What was once a fringe activity in the 1960s is now mainstream, and climbing’s popularity will only continue to grow as it makes its debut in the 2020 Olympics. But here’s the thing...all of this growth poses some significant challenges to our outdoor climbing areas. The overwhelming majority of our country’s climbing areas were developed decades ago, under the radar, and were not created t...o withstand the sheer number of climbers using them today. The original developers of many of our most popular crags could scarcely have imagined how popular climbing would one day become. We’re at a tipping point. We can choose to let our climbing areas continue to get beaten down, or we can invest in infrastructure that saves these special areas. The rapid growth of climbing has greatly outpaced our community’s ability to maintain our outdoor climbing areas. From Maine to California, the story is the same: our climbing areas are redlining, beat up and crumbling under the pressure of a growing climbing population. While @accessfund and local climbing organizations across the country are mobilizing to restore our climbing areas and ensure they are sustainable well into the future, we can’t do this work alone. Individual climbers must take responsibility for minimizing their impacts every time they climb outside. And that’s where we need YOUR help. We’re partnering with Access Fund across the next month to educate and activate our community to do our part in protecting the places we love to climb. Keep an eye out for upcoming events and opportunities to get involved. #accessfund #insideout #touchstoneclimbing
