Tell Your Lawmakers Pool & Hot Tub Maintenance is an Essential Service As more information on COVID-19 is being disseminated by the federal, state and local gov...ernments, there has been a push to classify industries as essential or non-essential. Those deemed as essential can continue to operate as quarantines and restrictions are put in place. PHTA is working tirelessly to ensure that our industry is classified as essential to preventing the transmission of infectious diseases, helping maintain community health, and ensuring public safety. We need your help. We want to make sure that this message is shared as broadly as possible, so we are asking for your help in sharing this with your state and local legislators. https://openstates.org/find_your_legislator/

Introducing #WhatIsWednesday where we answer all of the What is pool related questions commonly searched for online. Today’s question is What is backwashing...? ANSWER: This is a process designed to lower pressure, improve water flow and clean the filter medium by temporarily reversing the flow of water to flush out contaminants and debris sending dirt to waste. Thanks torontopoolproducts.ca for the image!

WINTERIZING POOL TIPS CLEAN OUT THE POOL. The first step is to clean out any leaves, insects, dirt and debris. Use your pool vacuum, or just fish them out with a net. Clean out the skimmer and the pump basket, too. Clean the tile line with tile cleaner. Easier now than next spring, when the scum has had all winter to set. GET THE FACTS ON POOL, SPA AND HOT TUB WATER USE 1. Swimming pools, spas and hot tubs are NOT water wasters. This fact has been confirmed by the state, numerous water districts and cities. 2. There are no state prohibitions on the use of public water to fill or refill pools or spas. This includes the governor's proclamations and State Water Resources Control Board regulations.... 3. Approximately 13,000 new pools will be built in California during 2015. The amount of water it will take to fill these new pools is approximately 8/1000 of 1 percent of just the state’s water used for urban purposes. 4. New swimming pools, spas and hot tubs use a tiny fraction of 1 percent of a city's or water district's annual water use. Generally, a rounding error! This fact has caused several cities that enacted bans on filling new pools to reverse their actions and prevented others from taking any action relative to swimming pools and spas. 5. Once built, swimming pools use about the same amount of water through evaporation as the same size area planted in drought-resistant landscaping. If the pool is covered when not in use, the pool will use 1/2 of the water than drought-resistant landscape, annually. Covered spas and hot tubs lose less than 5 percent of water due to evaporation since they are always covered to keep in the heat. 6. Bans on building new pools or prohibitions on filling new pools are highly discriminatory to this industry since they are not supported by the facts about water use by pools and spas and because there are no other water-use restrictions in most cities’ water shortage contingency plans that shut down an industry. 7. Self-contained spas and hot tubs use very little water. These units have built-in covers so they are always covered when not in use which means less than 5 percent annual evaporation. The average fill is 400 gallons which can last 6 to 12 months before refilling. Compared to indoor tubs, jetted tubs and long showers, spas and hot tubs are very water efficient. 8. The swimming pool, spa and hot tub industry supports the use of covers; turning off continuous flow automatic fill devises or replacing them with timed or weather based systems; use of water saving filters or other equipment; storing water in bladders, temporary pools or otherwise where possible when remodeling a pool or spa; and using new technology to clean chemicals and solid from pool water rather than dumping and refilling the pool.
Drought Update: CPSA Meets with Governor By Scott Webb - Aqua Magazine... CPSA President John Norwood met with California Governor Jerry Brown and 17 other stakeholders last week to discuss the impact of the drought on important business industries and what methods are being utilized to conserve water. Other business representatives from corporations like Home Depot and Starbucks to small associations composed of landscapers and cemetery operators offered meaningful suggestions to help reduce water use but also alleviate the hindrance the drought imposes on economic development. A consensus was reached that water use must be slowed without discriminating against individual industries that would curtail recovery from the Great Recession. CPSA described to the governor the difficulty it has faced in responding to restrictions as there are 482 municipalities and more than 700 water districts who all have the legal jurisdiction to prohibit the construction of new pools and the refilling of existing pools. The governor and his staff were intrigued to learn specifically what cities and districts were imposing these prohibitions and CPSA is already preparing a thorough list of places where these restrictions are being adopted. It was an educational meeting, as the facts surrounding the water saved by installing swimming pools and using pool covers are unfortunately not known by many government officials who are under pressure to make severe cutbacks or face punitive fines. This education process is ongoing. The meeting with the governor and his staff provided another opportunity to demonstrate the economic implications of measures under consideration in cities and water districts that could jeopardize a $5 billion industry. Since the beginning of 2013, CPSA has spearheaded a campaign to inform the public and public officials about savings that pools provide and to offer additional practices that can further curb water use. For example, pools use about half the water of the landscape they typically replace, and use even less water than drought resistant landscaping when a pool cover is used.
Those with variable speed pumps should be running them between 2400-3000 during the summer months to help with circulation. If you are using a cover be aware the first 6-8" of water can be well over 100+ degrees Make sure to keep an eye on the temperature of the pool if using a pool cover and/or solar. We have found a few pools 90+ the last few days
