Congrats to Rebecca Simor ’21 whose artwork, Chair Piece After Yoko Ono, received JURORS’ SECOND PRIZE in the 37th Annual Juried Student Exhibition at the Laband.... @becca.simor View all work in Young Contemporaries 2021 (link in bio) Becca is a graduating senior who majored in Art History. She discusses the conceptual underpinnings of her piece: Originally composed as a Word document, this work uses Times New Roman as a font to evoke a typewriter. It is meant to be printed distributed, shared, or remembered. As an homage to the instructional works of Yoko Ono inspired by Fluxus scores, Chair Piece After Yoko Ono provides an opportunity for the viewer to participate in the work. This conceptual work follows Yoko Ono's original formatting of such instructional pieces, while conjuring sentiments of personal reflection. The familiar act of adjusting one’s position in a chair is re-contextualized as a contemplative performance. As such, the participant is encouraged to reflect on a loved one every time they are prompted by a creaking noise, conjuring sentiments of the Ignatian Daily Examen. This work was produced as a component to a journal kept for course ARHS 4698 ‘Assemblage’ co-taught by Dr. Damon Willick and Dr. Paul Harris. MiaBella Chavez ’24 received JURORS’ FIRST PRIZE for her artwork, Glitch, in the Laband’s 37th Annual Juried Student Exhibition. CONGRATULATIONS MIABELLA! @mia.baella View all work in Young Contemporaries ... 2021 (link in bio) MiaBella just completed her first year at LMU as a Studio Arts major with an emphasis in photography. The artist describes her inspiration for her award- winning piece: From a series of photo collages which each explored a unique concept or theme in my identity. Each one has a background image of the LA River because I live next to it and wanted to include the physical location of my life in the analysis of my figurative position in life. Through high school I simultaneously gained a traditional education from an elite private school and one from the world around me. In my art, I was taught about Henri Cartier Bresson and Henry Fox Talbot but, at home, my family preferred D-Face and Ben Eine. At school, we talked about Kanye, shopping, and money, but after school, when I went back home in what they referred to as real Los Angeles, we talked about Cuco, love, and weekend plans. I was able to flip back and forth between these predetermined cultural dialects in a form of code switching. This is my interpretation of both versions of myself fighting to be present at once like a glitch. MiaBella Chavez, Glitch, 2020, photocollage with paint, 8.5 x 11 in. The Laband Art Gallery’s Annual Juried Student Exhibition is open to all students who have taken a Studio Arts class during the past school year. The Laband encourages students to submit their best work in any media of their choosing including drawing, printmaking, photography, painting, graphic design, sculpture, and multimedia. We invite two professionals who are active in Los Angeles’s art world to serve as co-jurors. Now in its 37th year, this exhibition serves as an excellent first professional experience for student artists and celebrates their flourishing creativity. website: lmujuriedshow2021.com Graphic design: José Miguel Camacho '22
