The surface of this old master painting was affected by in-grimed dirt, which needed to be cleaned off its surface in a multi-step process. Prior to targeting areas within the design as shown here, discrete tests were executed along the perimeters of the painting with a variety of aqueous, solvent and solvent gel based cleaning systems. The correct usage of this more sophisticated approach is based on the understanding of many factors, such as pH, ionic strength, hydrophilic-...lipophilic balance of a surfactant, critical micelle concentration, and the functions of buffers, surfactants and chelators in aqueous #cleaning solutions; solvents and solvent gels rely on #knowledge about solubility theory, aromaticity, dispersion forces, dipolar forces and hydrogen bonding. . Yellowed and cracked coating material that had the characteristics of a polyurethane varnish significantly altered the work’s aesthetics. It was removed mechanically after the application of a rigid gel made from purified algae matter and was loaded with a dilute enzymatic solution. A coherent and age appropriate state of the surface was successfully regained in favor of visual coherence. .
