I got a good result for my client when we were in court yesterday. We were in dependency court. My client is a foster parent who wants to adopt the child who has been in his custody. The Judge granted our motion for de factor status, which gives my client standing to participate in the proceedings. That is one of the first steps toward adoption in dependency matters. The hearing to terminate the parental rights of the biological parents is set for 2 months out. The Judge commented on my memorandum of points and authorities and said it was well written and well reasoned.

I did not know him well. I wanted to take his 8 day evidence course which was offered annually in Houston. I heard him speak last year at the annual minors counsel training. He taught a section on evidence which I found very helpful. He was a well known lawyer in the world of family law.

This is an interesting article. Actress Geena Davis was married to a plastic suregon who filed for divorce and wanted spousal support. Davis argued that they were never legally married, and that California does not recognize common law marriage. Judge Juhas agreed!
