"Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing we’ll ever do." Brené Brown Sharing the best of your Pacific Islander Heritage is knowing where we came from and sharing it with others. Here is Tinaitai, a proud Chamorrita Teine from the familian Long (Reyes clan taotao Malesso) yan Sauru (taotao Humatak/Målesso) yan Sai'mi (taotao Inalahan) with roots embedded in the Tupuola Sialamutu Sapa'u Tagomailelagi Leuta from Samoa. ... She proudly honors her Chamoru Samoan heritages through dance, language, faith and grace as she bares her malu in order to perform ceremony tasks and represent her Samoan lineage for ceremonial occasions in her Chamoru cultural attire. We honor her and the Tedtaotao Clan as the final winner of our 2020 Census participant and humbly thank them for always sharing their Pacific Islander Heritage with us. "The concept of ancestor worship, a central guiding principle in ancient Chamorro society, continues today in some general and some specific ways. Ancestral worship is tied to the idea that when a person dies they do not leave the world, but remain in some spiritual form. Ancient Chamorros believed their dead relatives returned as manganiti or taotaomo’na, spirits which played a large role in either protecting the living and ensuring they lived safe and prosperous lives, or b...ringing doom, illness and bad luck to them. Therefore, even after a person passed away, a relationship of respect had to be maintained with their memory, their spirit, their legacy and so on." -Dr. Miget Bevacqua https://guam.stripes.com//ancestral-worship-still-part-cha A commemorate reburial ceremony heard around the world for 33 ancient Chamorro ancestors from the village of Aliao in Saipan. Today’s LEAP #APILeadershipHighlight recognizes the Pacific Islander National COVID-19 Response Team, for their leadership supporting our Pacific Islander (PI) ...communities across the US. The Pacific Islander National COVID-19 Response Team, convened by The Pacific Islander Center of Primary Care Excellence, is a national coalition of PI researchers, health experts, community leaders and advocates formed to plan and implement infrastructure for supporting families and informing communities about COVID-19. National health data revealed that PI communities were disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Since April, the Response Team has mobilized over six regional locations nationwide, partnered with various health officials for disaggregated PI data, developed culturally rooted community engagement strategies, as well as inclusive policies inclusive of our PI communities unique cultural needs. You can view the data @ https://pi-copce.org/covid19response/, as well as awesome testimonies delivered by Dr. Samoa to the U.S. House of Representatives Ways & Means Committee Hearing about The Disproportionate Impact Of COVID-19 On Communities Of Color. Regionally, Southern California’s PI Response Team is led by many amazing Pacific Islander community leaders, including leaders from LEAP friends Empowering Pacific Islander Communities and Ocapica (Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance) (Tavae Samuelu and Alisi Tulua respectively). It’s also led by SoCal’s most respected and long-standing PI community leaders, like Kutturan Chamoru’s Heidi Quenga, and Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Alliance’s Kawen T. Young. We see you, members of the PI COVID-19 Response Team! Have an Asian or Pacific Islander leader that you would like to recognize for the amazing things they are doing in support of COVID-19 relief effort? Submit all API Leadership stories into leap.org/ourstories to be honored on our Social Media platforms every Tuesday and Thursday!
