A study commissioned by the CDC showed that in many infant diets, nearly all of the vegetables, dinners, fruits, and dry cereals, examined by the researchers were low in sodium content and did not contain added sugars. But 52% of ready-to-serve mixed grains and fruits contained too much added sugar, and 44% of those took more than one third of their total calories from sugar, according to researchers.Toddler dinners were especially high in sodium. Message for parents is limit juice and energy dense snacks in processed foods and read labels for added sugar content.

Teenage males who are obese might face an increased risk for colon cancer later in life based on a study published in the journal Gut. During a 35 year follow-up, nearly 240,000 Swedish males aged 16-20 had their BMI measured. High inflammation at baseline and being obese resulted in more than twice the risk of colon cancers than those of normal weight. This supports the theory that a higher % of body fat is increasingly toxic to the system as we approach middle age.

THE RISK OF DEVELOPING Type II diabetes may be increased by too much exposure to artificial light at night and a lack of exposure to natural light during the day for a long period of time. This is based on a study that was published in the Journal Philosophical. It has long been accepted that the lack of quality sleep is associated with the risk of developing type II diabetes. The body's circadian rhythms affect a healthy person's sleep patterns and are responsible for hor...mone release. Richard Stevens from the University of Connecticut, who co-authored the study, said:"It just means if you have a choice between an e-reader and a book, the book is less disruptive to your body clock. At night, the better, more circadian-friendly light is dimmer and, believe it or not, redder, like an incandescent bulb." It may be a good idea to decrease exposure to e readers, smart phones and tablets in the evening before sleep.Emoji See more

The National Cancer Institute is saying four or more cups a day reduces the risk of malignant melanoma by 20 percent. In a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, researchers at the NCI looked at food and cancer information from more than 447,000 people enrolled in a National Institutes of Health-AARP study who answered a 124-item food questionnaire and allowed the scientists access to their medical records. The investigators also observed the protective benefits of coffee increased the more a person drank. This effect was not statistically significant for decaffinated coffee. This study does not mean that you should rely on coffee to protect you from melanoma or other skin cancers!

Artificial sweeteners are very common food additives. Recent data shows they may be contributing to obesity as opposed to preventing it. Israeli scientists found that exposure to three sweeteners used in low-calorie snacks could raise blood sugar levels and increase the risk of glucose intolerance. The researchers at the Weitzman Institute of science carried out this experiment in 7 human volunteers. Four of them developed glucose intolerance. We know that certain artificial supplements make people more likely to crave sugar, but this may have to do with the metabolism of the body. No answers out yet but they do highlight the need to keep everything in moderation.

According to an article published March 12 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the needs of caregivers of an elderly family member may be overlooked. Ronald D. Adelman, MD, co-chief of geriatrics and palliative medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, gave a talk in which he detailed the highest risk factors for caregiver burnout . The risk factors for burnout arebeing a woman; the number of hours of care provided to the family member; ...the medical tasks being performed, stress caused by finances, lack of caregiver education, change in location of care given, and the presence of cognitive impairment in the patient; whether the caregiver actually lives with the patient, and finally, whether the caregiver had any choice in taking on that role. This article highlights how hard it is for a woman to be a caregiver to herself as she ages with increased familial responsibilities.Emoji See more

Organic foods found to have higher levels of antioxidants, lower levels of pesticides. Overall, organic crops had 18 to 69% higher concentrations of antioxidant compounds, which are said to have many health benefits, helping to prevent coronary heart disease, stroke and certain cancers. After analyzing 343 studies, an international team of experts led by Newcastle University found that organic crops and crop-based foods are up to 70% higher in key antioxidants then conventionally grown crops. The study was published in the British Journal of nutrition. It also showed that conventional crops were four times more likely to contain pesticide residues and 50% higher cadmium levels. A recent analysis of 16 prospective observational studies has led researchers to once again point to the benefit of increasing one's intake of fruits and vegetables. The optimum intake is two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables daily. In addition to this, each fruit or vegetable serving was associated with a 4% reduction in cardiovascular mortality. There iwas no associated cancer mortality reduction. It is obviously easier for most people to increase their fruit versus their vegetable intake. This leads to a possible increase amount of carbohydrate throughout the day. Moral of the story, vegetables are good for you and so is fruit in moderation..
