Plein Air At Little Corona Del Mar Beach Join me in May for an in person plein air class at one of Southern Californi...a's most beautiful and quaint beaches. I have had both covid vaccines and am excited about teaching plein air classes in person again. It will be so much fun to get out into nature, enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean and share with you my 20+ years of painting and teaching around the world! Even though I have been vaccinated I will wear a mask while I come to your easels to give individual help but not during my painting demonstration. I was amazed that by following your tutorial I watched as rocks underwater came alive in my painting and adding sea foam was made easy and simple. This were challenges in the past the prevented me from even contemplating painting seascapes. I loved how you used a slightly different mix of colours as you continued, and you carefully and clearly explained the colours you were blending. This made it a lot easier to follow and achieve a result far greater than I thought I could have done otherwise. The construction lines were a great tool and explaining how they worked during the compositional stage really helped pull the foreground into the focal point. I kept this in mind as I continued the finishing touches and I believe it made a huge difference to my finished painting. My big 'aha' moment was when you were describing shapes and discussing having too many of the same size. I then looked at the positive and negative shapes and saw my work from a completely different perspective. This was a game changer for me. Thank you so much Kristen, this has been a wonderful painting to do, I have learnt so much and look forward to painting many more. Sophia H.

When someone is looking at a large painting with a lot of brushstrokes, they often ask me about how long it takes to complete a painting such as with this 60" x... 30" oil that I just sold to our lovely, new neighbor yesterday. As you can see from these photos, I have to go to a place, connect and fall in love with the landscape or something within it, find some great views which is never hard:), then paint on location, take my own photos then paint a small painting or 2 and then.....paint a large one! It take a lot of time but what is time when you are doing what you love:). This is The Italian Garden at Hamilton Gardens, and eden in the heart of The North Island and reminiscent of Boboli Gardens in Florence. There is so much to love about this place and I think it shows in these paintings.
