A common sight around a home is a mud dauber nest. Unfortunately, these nests are unsightly and unwelcome by the homeowner. However they are beneficial to have around the house as they help control spiders, including black widow spiders! These wasps are usually solitary, and are not aggressive like bees or yellowjackets. They range in length from inch to over 1 inches. The female mud dauber wasps make nests (commonly called cells) from mud, and fill it with spiders o...r other insects as food for their offspring. Once the cell is full of food, a single egg is deposited and the cell is sealed. A cell or nest that has a hole in it indicates that it is empty, as the offspring has hatched and flown off. These nests are usually placed in protected areas such as under eaves or playsets, or among trees. Often the mud dauber wasps link many cells together to make one large nest. The best way to manage these type of wasps is to dislodge and remove the mud nests by sweeping them down. Once the mud is removed, it may be necessary to clean the area with a high-pressure stream of water.
