On this day, December 16, 1969, the movie "Hello, Dolly!" premiered. What could that possibly have to do with Knott's history, you ask? Interestingly, there's a small piece of Knott's in that movie... the Charleston Fountain! Yes, Knott's iconic fountain pops up in two scenes with a lost twin fountain. Knott's fountain can be seen in an outdoor park scene when the cast sings "When We Are Dancing" and again inside the Harmonia Gardens restaurant as Barbara Streisand, Louis Arm...strong, and the cast perform several numbers, including the showstopper, "Hello, Dolly!" And yet, that's not all! . The twin fountains were not sold off during Twentieth Century Fox's 1971 studio auction as both were seen again in Irwin Allen's 1974 "The Towering Inferno" as decor in the burning skyscraper's top-floor restaurant. One of the fountains was purchased as a centerpiece at Knott's Roaring 20's in 1975 where it sat in the middle of a flower bed, without water. The Charleston Circle fountain was the centerpiece for greenery and stage shows until the fountain was rebuilt with flowing water in the late 1970s. . And yet that's not nearly the end of the story as "Hello, Dolly!" received a new audience when the musical number "It Only Takes a Moment" popped up in the 2008 Pixar movie, "WALL-E," Knott's Charleston Fountain included! #TodayInHistory #Knotts100 See more

GhostRider roller coaster was designed by Knott's in-house Architecture and Design Department and Custom Coasters Inc. with construction greenlit by the Knott family before the Cedar Fair purchase. The massive, wooden roller coaster replaced a large portion of the California Marketplace, including Marion and Toni's Dresshop, Paul von Klieben's Pan for Gold attraction, and Walter Knott's mythic volcano. Yet what Knott's received in their place was a marquee attraction that str...etched from Ghost Town to Beach Boulevard. Led by Knott's designer Robin Hall, who also worked on the design of Magic Mountain's Colossus roller coaster, GhostRider was intended to be "the largest in the West." . Opening on December 8, 1998, the mountain of lumber reached a peak at 118 feet and dropped riders 108 feet on a 51-degree, curved plunge with speeds reaching 56 miles an hour. Riders experienced G-forces three times the force of Earth's gravity as well as weightlessness along the ups and downs of the 4,533-foot trip. Laid end to end, the wooden beams used to construct Ghostrider would stretch 475 miles. Ten years after the debut of Ghost Town, street after street of vintage and inspired buildings had been added until they stretched from the Gold Trails Hotel to what would become Calico Square. At the north end of Calico Square was the Ghost Town and Calico Railroad with its historic depot, originally a trolley station for the City of Stanton. At the south end of Calico Square, a large establishment was being designed by Paul von Klieben. From the gold-mining town of Vallecit...o, von Klieben nabbed a 14-foot bar from an abandoned saloon and repurposed it for Knott's Berry Farm's Calico Saloon. Contrary to popular belief, the saloon was named not for the silver-mining ghost town of Calico, but for the historically appropriate calico fabric that von Klieben used for wallpaper. Behind its bar was the enormous mural "Saturday Night in Old Calico, 1888" which forever tied Ghost Town to Calico, regardless of the building's wallpaper selection. . When the saloon opened on October 20, 1951, its entertainment was free and plentiful with Les Jones at the piano with songs and can-can dancing from performers such as Cecilia Peterson and Marilyn Schuler. Waitresses utilized a custom dumbwaiter to get drinks from the bar to patrons in the balcony. There was no alcohol served at Knott's when the Calico Saloon opened and hardly a decent stage either. Entertainment was offered from the balcony of the saloon, but that was moved in 1983 when von Klieben's large mural was removed and a stage created behind the bar. The dressing rooms and stage took over a portion of the Temperance Garden behind the saloon, but the change was necessary for performer safety and the growing crowds. In 1996, the historic bar was gutted and its interior rebuilt, yet its enormous von Klieben mural of a raucous night in old Calico is still on Farm and can be found at the top of the stairs in the Pitchur Gallery. #TodayInHistory #Knotts100 See more
