Our partners at CAL FIRE's Siskiyou Unit will be requiring residential burn permits starting May 1st for any type of open burning within State Responsibility Areas (SRA) of Siskiyou County. Check out their post for more information including how to obtain a permit, how to find out if it's a burn day and how to safely burn debris piles. Please remember that it is dry in and around the #KlamathNF. If you decide to burn a debris pile, please follow the requirements and remain vigilant to avoid starting a wildfire.

The Klamath National Forest is planning on doing a couple prescribed burns tomorrow if the conditions are desirable. In the McKinley Peak area, 10 miles north of Fort Jones, firefighters from the Salmon/Scott River Ranger District will be doing a 60-acre prescribed burn. Residents from Yreka and Scott Valley might be able to see #smoke from this project. On the eastern side of the Forest, the Goosenest Ranger District will be burning 60 acres north of the community of Tennan...t. Folks driving on Highway 97 will be able to see smoke from that project as well. Fire managers use #prescribedfire as a cost-effective tool to reduce hazardous fuel loads to improve firefighter safety and help protect communities during #wildfires. Prescribed fire also improves forest health in general and enhances wildlife habitat and forage within the #fireadapted ecosystems of the #KlamathNF. #GoodFire

Mastication is just one of the techniques successfully being used in the Craggy Project to reduce vegetation in the Klamath National Forest and reduce wildfire hazard in the wildland urban interface.

U.S. Forest Service 09.09.2020

#RedSalmonComplex Update: Today’s fire behavior on the Red Salmon Complex remained unchanged from the last few days. Less smoke was reported in the fire area today. The improved visibility allowed air attack a clear view of the fire, verifying that it remains on the west side of Plummer Creek with decreased fire activity in the drainage. Fire managers are also continuing to use infrared detection flights to monitor fire growth. Dry conditions with above normal daytime tempe...ratures are forecast through most of the coming week. Humidity will remain low each day, with poor overnight recoveries on the ridges and good recoveries in the valleys. Winds will generally remain light and terrain driven, although winds could gust to around 20 mph over a few wind-prone exposed ridges. A cold front will bring substantial cooling and a chance for rain with some snow showers in the mountains Friday through Saturday. Firefighters are monitoring fire activity, patrolling firelines and strengthening them where needed. The #KlamathNF portion of the fire has eight fire engines and two twenty-person hand crews with overhead assigned. A night shift continues to be staffed on the Klamath zone of the Red Salmon Complex. Three helicopters are assigned to the fire and operating out of Scott Valley. Suppression repair remains in full swing across the incident, with a grader, walking excavator (also known as a spider), three water tenders and a specialized high-volume pump working on the Klamath zone to stabilize firelines and roads ahead of precipitation events. Visit https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/6891/ for more information.

Slater Devil Fires Update for 11-1-2020 #KlamathNF

U.S. Forest Service 05.08.2020

#RedSalmonComplex Evening Update: Fire behavior remained moderated today in the Plummer Creek drainage. Smoke production continued to impact areas around the fire. An infrared flight during the day confirmed that fire remains on the west side of Plummer Creek. Infrared flights are occurring daily to verify the location of the fire’s edge. Weather conditions were similar to yesterday over the fire. Dry and warm conditions are expected to continue through Monday, with moderate... ridgetop recoveries, strong overnight inversions and similar winds. During the early morning hours, it is possible that the inversion could lower, resulting in very warm, very dry, and breezy conditions at higher elevations. Beginning Tuesday, a transition to a wetter and cooler pattern will begin, with increasing chances for rain by the end of the week. Tomorrow, the #KlamathNF portion of the fire will have eight fire engines, two twenty-person hand crews, a water tender and miscellaneous equipment and overhead assigned. Fire crews continue to patrol and improve lines and conduct suppression repair. A night shift remains staffed on the Klamath zone of the Red Salmon Complex. Three helicopters are assigned to the fire and operating out of Scott Valley. Visibility continues to prevent helicopters from performing bucket work on the fire.
