WASHINGTON Despite the government shutdown, the Internal Revenue Service today confirmed that it will process tax returns beginning January 28, 2019, and provide refunds to taxpayers as scheduled. The filing deadline to submit 2018 tax returns is Monday, April 15, 2019, for most taxpayers. Because of the Patriots’ Day holiday on April 15 in Maine and Massachusetts and the Emancipation Day holiday on April 16 in the District of Columbia, taxpayers who live in Maine or Massachusetts have until April 17, 2019, to file their returns.

Government Shutdown and Tax Preparers The IRS will need to continue return processing activities to the extent necessary to protect Government property, which includes tax revenue, and maintain the integrity of the federal tax collection process, along with certain other activities authorized under the Anti-Deficiency Act. The following activities will be furloughed and will NOT be conducted: Issuing refunds... Processing non-disaster relief transcripts, income verification express service/return and income verification services Processing 1040X, amended returns All audit functions, examination of returns and processing of non-electronic tax returns that do not include remittances Non-automated collections Legal counsel Taxpayer services such as responding to taxpayer questions (call sites) If the shutdown extends beyond five business days, these activities will be reassessed and possibly reinstated. Remember, the prevailing tax law remains in effect and all taxpayers should continue to meet their tax obligations as normal. See more

IRS e-File Shutdown for Individual Returns - November 17 The IRS has announced that the 1040 e-file system will be taken off-line to perform annual system maintenance in preparation for the upcoming filing season. The last day in 2018 to e-file2017 Federal and State Individual tax returns is Saturday, November 17, 2018. Taxpayers required to file during this shutdown period will have to file paper returns..... The IRS has not yet released the shutdown schedule for business returns; however, an announcement with the dates and times is expected in early December. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that tax season will open on Monday, January 29, 2018. The IRS will begin accepting paper and electronic tax returns that day. This is a week later than had been widely reported. Every year, taxpayers have questions about early filing. KJM Tax Consulting will accept tax returns before opening day, January 29, 2018. That doesn't mean that your tax return will be filed early. KJM Tax Consulting will submit returns when IRS systems open. Although the IRS will begin accepting both electronic and paper tax returns on January 29, 2018, paper tax returns will be processed later, in mid-February, as system updates continue. The IRS strongly encourages people to file their tax returns electronically for faster refunds And even though it feels like extra time, it's actually a shorter tax season. Because of the delayed start, the 2018 tax season will last just 79 days. In contrast, the 2017 tax season lasted 86 days. In 2017, the season started six days earlier (on January 23, 2017) and ran through April 18, 2017. There's another delay to keep in mind, too. The law now requires the IRS to hold refunds tied to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) until February 15.
