Kiwanis Club of Palo Alto 14.12.2020

Last night at the Weekly Meeting on Zoom of the Kiwanis Club of Palo Alto the Club celebrated the Andy Anderson Awards for 2020. Since we were unable to have the student and his or her parents for lunch, in addition to the plaque anda check for the Student’s personal use, (Not intended as a scholarship) we gave them a gift card for $75 to take their parents to lunch. This Award honors the service of Clarence Andy Anderson. Sadly, we lost Andy in 2014 and miss him dearly.... He was an exemplary member of the Kiwanis Club of Palo Alto for 46 years, from 1968 to 2014. Upon retiring, Andy joined the Kiwanis Club of Palo Alto, serving as President in 1973-74 and as Lieutenant Governor in 1976-77. Known as Mr. Kiwanis to many, he served as Club Secretary for 23 years from 1979 until 2002, as well as chairman of the Credentials Committee for the California-Nevada District of Kiwanis International for 12 years. Additionally, Andy was the advisor to the Palo Alto High School Key Club from 1976 to 1986. (A student Community Service Organization that includes leadership training for the students sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Palo Alto) In 1998 the Kiwanis Club of Palo Alto created the Andy Anderson Award to further honor the contributions Andy has made to Kiwanis, to our community and to education. Each year the award is presented to one sophomore boy and one sophomore girl from three local high schools (Palo Alto, Gunn, and Mid-Peninsula). The award is given to students that have shown marked improvement from the third quarter freshman year to the third quarter sophomore year. Improvement can be in academics, attendance, attitude, involvement, or a combination of some or all of these areas. Many times, the award will be the first award the student has ever won and is intended as a validation that their hard work and determination has set them on a better path. The students and their families are invited to join us for lunch and the award presentation. Each student is chosen by the counseling staff of their respective school. Over 100 high school students have received this award to date. In past years Andy was present to hand each recipient their check and so we are again reminded of our loss today. The continuation of this award program is a wonderful way to honor and celebrate an exceptional person. This year’s recipients are: From Mid-Peninsula High School, Nyla Byers and Dwight Garraway From Gunn High School, Monserrat Roldan Cisneros and Axel Adame, and From Palo Alto High School, Leah Landa-Martinez and Blake Chase. The Kiwanis Club of Palo Alto this week held a Roundtable Meeting on Wednesday evening, November 25, 2020 on Zoom. A Roundtable Meeting is an informal Meeting where Members get together and visit. No official Program is held, and the Club just visits. Sometimes announcements are given out, and once in a rare occasion, an important bit of information is shared. Not this time. The announcements were given and postrd. No Program was given, just good friendships were continued. KidsNeedKiwanis, #PaloAltoChamberofCommerce, #KiwanisClubofPaloAlto
