Langston Hughes was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from Joplin, Missouri. The #MOKA2021 theme is Awakening! As we reflect on a year full of changes and challenges, we are at a point in our society where there is an ‘awakening’ happening, sparking a questioning of how things can improve in the future. In the spirit of the Dadaist art movement, we posed the question, "what does the future hold?" to students as they create their artwork. Interested families can register your current K-2nd graders to be in the next class of young scholars in the virtual 2021 Freedom Schools Literacy Academy July 6-August 6, put on by The Center for Black Educator Development (@center.black.educator.dev). Scholars will be taught by college student teachers who mirror their futures using an educational approach steeped in Black culture, history and pedagogy.
