#LandmarkTuesdays The Kinmon Gakuen Building is significant for its association with the social, cultural, and educational enrichment of Japanese Americans in S...an Francisco during the 20th century as the home of the country’s oldest Japanese language and culture school, Kinmon Gakuen (Golden Gate Institute), from 1926 to the present. It is #sflandmark no. 288 (the city’s newest addition). The Building was also used as a processing center during World War II, where citizens and noncitizens of Japanese ancestry were required to report before being relocated to incarceration camps across the country. The building is also significant for its association with community organizing and activism among African Americans in San Francisco during the 20th century, providing African American youth a space for social, educational, and recreational opportunities. Lastly, the building itself is an excellent example of an educational building designed in the Mediterranean Revival style in San Francisco, a popular design aesthetic for school buildings during the 1920s and 1930s. The language school is also now an official member of the city’s Legacy Business Registry as of Aug. 2019. Original caption: "San Francisco, California. Bush Street, San Francisco. Japanese family heads and persons living alone form a line outside Civil Control station located in the Japanese American Citizens League Auditorium at 2031 Bush Street, to appear for "processing" in response to Civilian Exclusion Order Number 20." US National Archives photo, April 25, 1942 by Dorothea Lange, with overlay done by Jon Voss. The building's side entrance depicted in the photograph still standing today.
