Did you know that when your car breaks down or you’re involved in a traffic accident and you call the CHP for help, the tow truck that is sent has been inspecte...d by the CHP? Did you also know the tow company has been approved and is fully insured, and its driver has undergone a pre-employment background check? The CHP utilizes a thorough application and approval process for all tow companies that it sends to help with disabled motorists and traffic collisions. This process involves the inspection of tow trucks for safety and necessary equipment. The CHP makes sure each company is properly insured, approving all drivers and employees via background checks, making sure each company is enrolled in substance abuse testing for their employees, and making sure each company has safe places to store vehicles. This tow truck - recently stopped by one of our officers was not a CHP approved truck. Its driver’s license was suspended, it had no insurance, and it had numerous safety violations that would have made it unsafe to tow your vehicle. If your vehicle breaks down on a freeway or highway, it is unlawful for tow trucks to stop for you unsolicited (unless it’s the Freeway Service Patrol in major metropolitan areas). They may only help you if called by CHP or yourself. With the outside temperatures beginning to rise, we thought it would be a good time to remind everyone about Kaitlyn's law. Kaitlyn’s law, California Vehicle C...ode Section 15600 and 15620(a), went into effect January 1, 2002. It is named in memory of Kaitlyn Marie Russell who, in August 2000, was left behind in a vehicle on a warm California day and died as a result of being left alone for two hours. But it only takes a few minutes for the temperature to rise dangerously. The purpose of Kaitlyn’s Law (aka Unattended Child in Motor Vehicle Safety Act) is to help prevent injuries to, and the death of young children from the effects of being left alone in a motor vehicle, to help educate parents and caretakers about the dangers of leaving children alone in a motor vehicle. This law prohibits anyone from leaving a child six years of age or younger unattended in a motor vehicle without the supervision of someone at least 12 years of age or older. If you see a child alone in a car, do something! Here are a few things you can do to save a child: - Do not wait more than a few minutes for the driver to return. - If the child is not responsive or is in distress, immediately call 9-1-1, get the child out of the car and spray with cool water. - If the child is responsive, stay with the child until help arrives and have someone else search for the driver. Some warning signs of Heatstroke are: - Red, hot, and dry skin - No sweating - Strong, rapid or weak pulse - Nausea - Confusion or strange behavior
