HEALTH CONCERNS CAN BE a lot different for women than for men, and that even includes dental health! Dental health concerns unique to women: 1. TMD and Sjörgen’s syndrome both affect women more than men. 2. Puberty, pregnancy, and menopause all involve hormonal changes that can make gingivitis and gum inflammation more likely.... 3. Eating disorders disproportionately affect women, and the resulting malnutrition damages every system in the body. Bulimia also directly damages the teeth through frequent exposure to stomach acid. Dental health concerns unique to men: 1. Being less likely to brush and floss regularly. Men are 20% less likely than women to brush twice a day, floss daily, and even replace old toothbrushes! They’re also less likely to go to the dentist for a regular preventative checkup. 2. Because men are more likely to drink, smoke, and chew tobacco than women, they are at greater risk of advanced gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancer. #DentalHealth #MensDentalHealth #WomensDentalHealth #challenges

Celebrating the LOVE we have for our Patients! Happy Valentine’s Weekend from Kingsley Dental

IN THE SPIRIT OF Black History Month, we’re spotlighting Robert Tanner Freeman, the first professionally trained black dentist in the US. Robert was the son of a carpenter who bought his family’s freedom and moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. In his teens, Robert was mentored by Dr. Noble, a Washington D.C. dentist. He applied to and was rejected by two colleges for his skin color before being accepted into the Harvard University School of Dental Medicine. He was one of the... first six African Americans in the college, alongside George Franklin Grant, who had a similar background and later became the first black Harvard faculty member. After graduating with his DMD in 1869, Dr. Freeman returned to D.C. and practiced dentistry in the same building as his old mentor. Tragically, he died a few short years later due to a water-borne disease. For one who had to overcome so many obstacles and who died so young, Dr. Freeman left behind a great legacy, including paving the way for the successful dental careers of generations of black Americans and a grandson who became the first African American member of the U.S. Cabinet. #blackhistorymonth #blackvoices #oralhealth

Everyone’s familiar with the private practice dentist, who either has their own practice or partners up with one or more other dentists to form one. However, that’s not what everyone who earns a four-year dental degree decides to do with it. There are research dentists, who l...ive on the cutting edge of advancements in technology and treatments. There are dentists who get to go international with the WHO, the FAO, and UNESCO. There are dentists who work in hospitals alongside physicians. And, of course, there are the academic dentists who teach aspiring dentists their craft! About 1 in 5 dentists choose to undergo years of additional training so that they can work in one of the nine dental specialties outside of general dentistry: Dental Public Health, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, and Prosthodontics. Who would dentists be without their amazing teams? Dental hygienists, dental assistants, and dental lab technicians all perform essential roles in keeping smiles healthy. The assistants and hygienists work closely with patients to provide a high level of care, and lab technicians do the unseen work of designing crowns, braces, and dentures dentists use.
