Right in the middle of the Beatitudes in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), he says, Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Be merciful, cries the heartbroken mother to the judge. Her guilty son awaits his sentence. To be merciful is to not give a person what they deserve. When Jesus says, Blessed are the merciful, he cannot mean something so simple as be kind to people you like, that do nice stuff for you, or that are in a good relationship wit...h you. A few verses down in this sermon, Jesus makes that clear, If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?. Mercy is kindness (undeserved) to a stranger, even an enemy, standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, loving the loveless, helping the helpless even when they got themselves into this situation. Oh and one more thing Jesus said, Blessed are the merciful. That is not the person who showed mercy once or maybe occasionally. That is the person who is characterized by being merciful - all the time. Who is that??? Kindness to enemies? Kindness to those who don’t deserve it? Kindness to others, even strangers, all the time? Blessed is merciful Jesus and because of that we will be (are) shown mercy. It is clear that Jesus is the perfectly blessed one because he alone fulfills these Beatitudes perfectly. So, we are shown mercy and forgiveness for all our weakness and failures to be merciful! Thank you, Jesus! Now, wonder with me. What can that look like in our lives as forgiven children of God? What can that look like in a congregation of forgiven believers like we have at King of Kings? Let’s see this week what it means for us to be a gathering group of Christians who go out to each day to live Christ’s kindness for others - standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, loving the loveless, helping the helpless... If I took a poll, I imagine that I would find that the majority of us (legal age adults) are far more interested in the wine than the vine. Does it taste good? Does it pair well with red meat (or chicken)? We would have to admit, however, that a wine is only as good as its vine. In fact, disconnect a branch from the vine and you’ll soon have no wine. Connect it to the vine - well, that’s a start. The Good News is that you are connected to the Vine - to Jesus Christ. Where you... could not produce any good fruit on your own, grafted to the Vine, now you bear abundant fruit. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15) What does that fruit look like? Those are the selfless good works you do for the people around you - depending on what they need. It is the parent who loves her child and feeds him. It is the entrepreneur who loves their customer and provides excellent product and service. It is the Christian neighbor who points out the leak on the side yard so that he can fix it before too much damage or dollars are washed away. You see? Our fruit looks like the good work that faith in Jesus Christ naturally produces. Any honest Christian, however, notices that my fruit doesn’t always look so good. It’s too often filled with rotten selfishness. Thank God that the One who attaches me to the Vine is also the one who graciously rescues me from all sin! The prophet Isaiah tells us that God freely pardons sin, and then God tells us why: ‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord. (Isaiah 55:8) In other words, God doesn’t operate with a human standard of justice. No, our Savior thinks outside the box. . How does Jesus think outside the box? The hiker takes a careful step towards the bridge. It’s bridge in quotes because what she is looking at amounts to nothing more than a thick stick crossing a 30 foot wide canyon that runs 50 feet deep over a raging river. She puts one foot gingerly on the bridge and presses down firmly twice. It holds. But, will it hold her weight all the way across from this side to that? Is it dependable? Is it worth the risk? Dependability is the key question especially in life or dea...th situations. The truth is we all die. We all die because we all sin. At death, we all face this judgment where it is decided - once and for all - life in heaven or death in hell. The stakes couldn’t be higher. I suppose we could summarize our two options in this way: (1) we can depend on our own track record of life. Or, (2) we can depend on, as Paul suggests in Romans 9, on God’s mercy. Either way, the Judge calls for perfection. That’s the way he made us. That’s what he rightly expects. Is your own track record dependable? Press down on it firmly twice? Will it hold up perfectly in a life and death situation? Or, should you consider God’s mercy. God, please do not give me what I deserve for my sin. I am not dependable. Graciously, God takes the choice out of our hands - we would screw that up too. Through the Apostle Paul, he promises, that it does indeed depend on his mercy. In his mercy, he sent Jesus. Jesus lived that perfect life, died for your sins, and rose again so that you would have firm proof that he is 100% dependable in life and in death. Press down on him firmly. He holds up. He holds you up in life and in death. In him, you will only here the Judge say, Well done, good and faithful servant! Let’s rejoice in the generous mercy of our heavenly Father this week! Who needs to hear about God’s mercy from you? Pastor Brian Doebler Pastor, King of Kings Lutheran

"There have always been lots of things that cause divisions among God’s people," writes Pastor Nathan Nass. "This fall, however, we’ve been hit by a tsunami of a never-ending pandemic in the middle of a hotly charged presidential election all happening against the backdrop of anger surrounding social justice. The result? Divisions over non-biblical matters are threatening our congregations. You know it. You’ve felt it. The devil loves it!...How do we love fellow Christians wh...en different opinions divide us? We need to go back to God’s Word." . Lord, even when we are surrounded by people, we can feel so alone. We feel isolated and cut off from others because no one has our problems or is going through what we are going through. We are never alone, but the devil wants us to feel that way. It is easier for him to pick us off and take us down when we think we’re all alone. When King David felt alone and under attack on every side, he said, God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but t...he rebellious live in a sun-scorched land (Psalm 68:6). So we ask you, Lord, to place us in as many families as you possibly can. Make us who live under the same roof a close-knit family. Remove any serious conflict among us and help us stop the silly bickering over unimportant things. Make us a family at work because we are all dedicated to being productive and earning an honest living. Make our country a family of citizens who share the values of life, liberty, and happiness for everyone because we were all created by you. Make our church a close and growing family because we listen to your Word, sing songs, and pray all at the same time. And when we are by ourselves, help us remember we are never alone. You are always our Father, and we are always your children. Jesus is always our brother and our Savior. Because of him, we are never alone. Amen. "Lord, place us in families" by Jason Nelson, Time of Grace
