WHAT DOES A CAREER in dentistry look like? Being a dentist is an incredibly rewarding career, and beyond helping our patients maintain lifelong healthy smiles, we hope our team inspires at least a few budding dentists out there! The dental career everyone is most familiar with is the private practice dentist, meaning an individual dentist or a partnership working with local patients in their own practice. Not everyone who graduates from a four-year dental program goes in t...his direction. Academic dentists add a teaching role and help usher in the next generation of dentists. Research dentists get to be on the cutting edge of new advancements in treatments and technology. Some dentists go international and work with organizations like the WHO, UNESCO, and FAO. Finally, there are dentists who work alongside physicians in hospitals. About 20% of dentists undergo additional years of training in one of the nine dental specialties: Dental Public Health, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (that’s us!), Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, and Prosthodontics. To become orthodontists, it takes 2-3 years of post-graduate residency to learn everything we need to be able to straighten smiles. Aside from the dentists themselves, other essential roles in the field of dentistry are dental hygienists, dental assistants, and dental lab technicians. Hygienists and assistants interact closely with patients to ensure a high level of care, while dental lab technicians work behind the scenes designing the dentures, crowns, and braces used by dentists. And of course we wouldn’t get far without our office staff! #dentistry #career #education #dentalfield

ANYONE OUT OF THEIR teens might think they missed their chance for straight teeth, but that’s not true! Modern orthodontic treatment is for adults too. While it’s true that our teeth can be guided into place more easily when we are younger, they will still respond to orthodontic appliances. And whether or not we had braces as teens, our teeth can still shift over time. In a process called mesial drift, our teeth slowly move towards the front of our mouths as we age. Other ...factors, including enamel loss, teeth grinding, and tooth loss, can move our teeth out of alignment too. The result is an increasingly crooked, overcrowded smile that is harder to keep healthy. Some of the things we do every day without even thinking about it can contribute to our teeth shifting over time. Stomach sleeping and resting our heads on our hands when sitting can both be culprits of dental shifting, but good posture and side or back sleeping will minimize this effect. Good oral hygiene is also important for keeping our teeth where they should be, because it helps reduce enamel loss over time. So keep up with that daily flossing and twice daily brushing, and don’t forget about regular dental appointments! One advantage adult orthodontic patients have over teenagers is that they have the self-discipline to carefully follow the orthodontist’s instructions, ensuring better, timelier results! #orthodontictreatment #straightteeth #orthodontics

TO CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH, we want to spotlight one of the early pioneers of African Americans in dentistry: Dr. George Franklin Grant, born in Oswego, New York in 1846 to parents who were former slaves. As a teenager, George worked as a lab assistant to local dentist Dr. Albert Smith, who encouraged him to pursue a career in dentistry. At age 22, George was one of the first six African Americans accepted into the Harvard University School of Dental Medicine. After g...raduating in 1870, Dr. Grant went on to become the first black Harvard faculty member when he took a position in the Department of Mechanical Dentistry. He specialized in cleft palate and speech therapy, and he gained international recognition for inventing a prosthetic insert that enabled patients with cleft palates to speak and eat normally. Dr. Grant was a founding member and president of the Harvard Odontological Society. He was also elected President of the Harvard Dental Association in 1881. Perhaps his most unusual accomplishment, though, was the invention of the golf tee! #blackhistorymonth #blackvoices #oralhealth

HALLOWEEN TENDS TO come with a lot of sugar and a lot of treats on the banned foods list for orthodontic patients. Let’s just take a minute and go over the best and worst types of treats for teeth and braces. Anything hard, sticky, or sour is going to be bad for teeth. Hard candy takes a while to dissolve, which means teeth are exposed to sugar for a long time, and it can easily break a bracket loose. Even the nuts in soft candy bars pose a risk. Sticky candy is a problem... because it adheres to teeth and braces. That’s like breakfast in bed for bacteria! Sour candy might not pose the same dangers to brackets, but it contains acid as well as sugar, so it’s doubly bad for teeth. Luckily, not all candy is awful for oral health or dangerous for braces-wearers. Chocolate is on the good end of the oral health spectrum, and the darker, the better. Chocolate contains compounds that limit oral bacteria, fight bad breath, and slow tooth decay. Dark chocolate has more of these compounds and their benefits are less offset by sugar than in milk chocolate. Other candies that are safe to eat with braces and not terrible for teeth include mint patties, peanut butter cups, and nut-free chocolate bars. These are soft and not too sticky, so biting into them doesn’t risk breaking brackets. #orthodontics #bracessafefoods #halloween

SEVERAL ANCIENT CULTURES, from ancient Egypt to the Roman Empire, and lasting all the way up to early modern England, blamed cavities and toothaches on a nefarious creature called a tooth worm. Gross! (But, more importantly, false.) We still aren’t sure where this theory came from, but it could be as simple as that they looked at diseased dental pulp and mistakenly thought it was a worm that had bored holes through the tooth. It wasn’t until the early years of the Enlight...enment era that pioneering dentists like Pierre Fauchard debunked the tooth worm theory. Still, they were kind of on the right track. It’s true that tiny organisms cause tooth decay but those organisms are bacteria, not parasitic worms. People didn’t have microscopes to be able to observe bacteria back then, so they gave it their best guess. Points for effort? Even though their theory about the cause was wrong, tooth decay wasn’t a widespread problem historically until sugar (oral bacteria’s favorite food) became a readily available commodity. That’s why we in the modern dental health community recommend cutting back on sugar consumption and limiting it to mealtimes! #toothdecay #history #dentalhistory
