According to Black Mamas Matter Alliance, this week was created to envision a world where Black mamas have the rights, respect, and resources to thrive before, during, and after pregnancy. The easy answer is because they don’t have to. I’m not a fan of forced smiles. I love genuine emotion and expression. But if you dig deeper and think about the issues I’ve been exploring and bringing up in my work, you’ll understand that these aren’t things to smile about. Joy (the title of this piece) was captured organically. I felt it was important to show and share our joy, our connections and love for one another if I am going to speak on our pains, I must also highlight our joys. If this work will live on after I’m gone, I want moments like this to be a part of that too. Not forced, but real...true.
