A lower subjective age is correlated with better health, longevity, and general well-being, while people with a greater subjective age have higher levels of inflammation, a marker of general ill health, and older looking brains. The question of what controls our subjective age, whether we can change it, has always been tricky to addre...ss scientifically. Now, research is revealing some surprising answers. The good news is that many of the factors that help determine how old we feel are things that we can control to add years to our lives and life to our years. People who feel younger live longer. Those who feel older have a shorter lifespan Positive attitude is more strongly associated with long life than any biomarker Being sociable and open to new experiences can keep you young at heart

Photo NIH U.S. National Library of Medicine In honor of Women's History Month, we want to recognize another extraordinary woman whose contributions have profoundly impacted the medical field. Virginia Apgar (1909-1974), an obstetrical anesthesiologist, invented a method for quickly evaluating the health of a baby right after birth. The Apgar test has significantly reduced infant mortality since it was first put to use in the 1950s. Before, doctors lost valuable time waiting two minutes for an infant to cry rather than immediately addressing signs of distress. In 1949, Apgar became the first woman to be a full professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
