Sensory processing disorder is a condition where the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. When dealing with children or adults with this condition it is important to understand how the brain and body respond to various stimuli. Individuals with sensory processing disorder can be oversensitive to things in their environment. For example: common sounds can be painful or overwhelming. The light touch of a shirt may chafe the... skin. Others with sensory processing disorder may: Be very uncoordinated Bump into things, Trip, Fall easily Not like particular foods due to textures or smells Be sensitive to bright lights Be hard to engage in conversation or play The following charts help to understand this condition and things you can do to reduce stimuli which are disturbing to you or your child.
