Early, systematic, explicit phonics instruction is an essential part, but only part, of a balanced, comprehensive reading program. Phonics and other word-identification skills are tools that children need to read for information, for enjoyment, and for developing insights. The intensity and form of phonics instruction must be adjusted to the individual needs of children by a well-prepared teacher. John J. Pikulski International Reading Associaton President 19971998

Help your child improve their Reading skills with Phonics. In order for young readers to become better readers it is important that the Phonics instruction they receive be both direct and systematic. This is because phonics knowledge aids in the development of word recognition. Word recognition, in turn, increases fluency. Reading fluency, then, improves reading comprehension since children are not struggling with decoding and are able to devote their full attention to making meaning from text. The California Department of Education (CDE) believes that the teacher is at the heart of student academic success. Teachers who are appropriately credentialed, have a deep understanding of the content they teach, and have been trained in a variety of instructional strategies are in the best position to aid California students in reaching academic proficiency.
Well-designed and carefully administered one-to-one reading instruction contributes to improved performance for many students who are struggling to read. Center for Parent Information and Resources
