We have assistance from CAL FIRE and are planning to have this fire put out quickly. It is currently 75% contained. Remember when there was an actual "fire season"? Those days are long gone! The extreme drought has made it so there aren't really any truly specific months or days when fire danger is higher than any other. WILDLAND WEDNESDAY - The equipment may change over the years but the goal is the same, create safe communities through fire prevention. The Alta Sierra Masticator Project is one such example. A 300 acre Donut fuel break surrounding the community of Alta Sierra. The project is funded by CalFire through California Investments Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund’s totaling over $1 million dollars.... The first step is a Licensed Timber Operator cuts and removes the dead trees. Next your KCFD crews work to remove the smaller trees and debris left from the tree harvesting. The piles are then burned or chipped with the masticator. The masticator is a king-size mower attached to an excavator. It moves through the forest selectively grinding up dead material and thinning trees. The finished product is an open, park-like stand of trees that is much healthier and fire resilient. #kerncountyfiredepartment #yourfirefightersatwork
