State of California Energy Commission Publishes Project Report Authored by Kennedy Jenks A final report for the California Energy Commission’s Lowering Food Waste Codigestion Costs project has been published in October, 2020. This report is based on a three-year research completed in 2019 by Kennedy Jenks. This report was based on demonstration study to evaluate a new technology to lower the pre-processing cost of food wastes and a new strategy to add fats, oil, and grease a...nd pre-processed food wastes for anaerobic digestion with wastewater sludge (co-digestion.) These two steps aim to lower overall cost of co-digestion and lower dewatered cake requiring disposal, which, in turn, will encourage the diversion of food waste from landfills and enhance production of digester gas, a renewable energy source. Lead author Ganesh Rajagopalan notes that ‘This study showed that preprocessing of food wastes using the organic extrusion press results in up to 54% cost savings compared to conventional techniques, along with an estimated $8.9 to $9.3 million worth of energy savings for a 100-million-gallons-per-day treatment plant.’ The project was performed at Silicon Valley Clean Water, Redwood City, CA. In addition to the Kennedy Jenks leadership team, project support was provided by Silicon Valley Clean Water, San Francisco Recology, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, CalRecycle and the County of San Mateo. The Kennedy Jenks team partnered with Power Engineering Construction Company and Joe Hill Consulting Engineers to repair the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC)'s Southeast Outfall Islais Creek Crossing, overcoming tidal challenges and limited facility shutdowns during construction. The team installed a 48" HDPE pipe using the float and sink method and brought the new pipeline online in less than one year (from the start of design in October 2018) before the start of the wet weather season! Congratulations to all members of the team on a job well done.

KJ’s Ryan Holloway, along with two colleagues from the Colorado School of Mines completed a significant research study that was recently published in the online edition of Science Direct. The article is titled ‘Enhancement of Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment With Hydraulic Selection’ and addresses critical issues involving activated granular sludge. Kennedy Jenks’ client Silicon Valley Clean Water (SVCW), a Joint Powers Authority (JPA) in Redwood City, California is featured in the current issue of ‘Clean Water,’ the publication of the California Water Environment Association. The Kennedy Jenks SVCW team received grant funding from the California Energy Commission to evaluate food waste organics co-digestion technology.
