A QUICK HISTORY OF DRY CLEANING 79 AD - The earliest cleaners were called fullers. They used ammonia and clay to clean togas. Yes, they used urine to remove stains. 1845 - Jean-Baptiste Jolly, a Frenchman, accidentally spills kerosene on a dirty tablecloth. Surprised that the stains are removed, he opens a store and calls the service "dry cleaning" because of its waterless process. Unsurprisingly, kerosene is flammable and governments are not happy. 1939 - New solvents are discovered that do a better job of cleaning clothes and don't catch fire. The world rejoices! Uniforms are very expensive and generally require professional cleaning. Uniforms should be cleaned as soon as possible after each use in order to prevent any stains from setting and to avoid attracting insects, which especially prey on wool fibers.
