Hey, West Sac! Happy to join Mayor Martha Guerrero and sooooo many volunteers at a vaccination clinic today at Holy Cross church. We had drive-ins, bike-ins, and walk-ins...and vaccinated @600 neighbors!
Thanks, Democratic Party of Sacramento County. I’m proud to have your ongoing support!
California students at all levels need ethnic studies! Proud to join this panel tomorrow night to discuss my perspective as an educator and a community leader. https://fb.me/e/1z4i0a0Nb
Today, Cosumnes River College will be celebrating 50 years of changing lives in Elk Grove and South Sacramento. Join me by registering for this free (and inspiring) event here: https://crc.losrios.edu//03-25-virtual-event-paths-forged-
As a K-12 teacher, I was able to get my first COVID-19 vaccine today! All Los Rios employees are also eligible to schedule an appointment to get vaccinated in both Sacramento and Yolo counties. It’s free and it’s safesign up today! (More information was sent out in an email to all Los Rios employees yesterday.)
Last night, I joined a small group outside Davis City Hall with my small sign to protest anti-Asian harassment in Yolo County. It was a meaningful moment of street-corner solidarity. Then I drove home and heard over the car radio that Asian women in Georgia had been the target of unspeakable violence. And, this morning in the classroom, I faced aspiring Asian-American journalists struggling to make sense of the murders. ... There is no sense. There is hate afoot in our country that must be named, confronted, and stopped. That is why I’ve asked the Board of Trustees of the Los Rios Community College District to pass a resolution stating anti-Asian hate has no place on our campuses or in our communities.
Glad to join a meeting between Assemblymember Kevin McCarty and Los Rios CCD on Friday working toward the same goal: accessible and low-cost higher education for all Californians. We’re working together for... A COLA in the budget to fund programs needed for our region’s educational and economic recovery A requirement that all high school seniors...not just the 4.0’s...complete the FAFSA financial aid form so our students know what’s possible Streamlined transfer from the community colleges to UC campuses And more financial aid through Cal Grants...because our students are hurting.
Congratulations to Dr. Biden, the first community college faculty member in the White House! https://www.google.com//jill-biden-teacher-first-lady-hist
My family joined the new administration in lighting a candle today in memory of the 400,000 lost to COVID-19. We are also holding on to hope that coming vaccines and our current masks and isolation will bring an end to this tragedy. As a Los Rios trustee, I am grateful that our community colleges have put preserving the lives of faculty, staff and students first. Someday soon we will return to our campuses but we can never bring back those who are lost to this cruel virus.
A "board retreat" might sound a little like a spa day but it's really a two-day meeting for the board to hear reports and engage in longer discussions. There are no actions on the agenda...just lots of information. You can find the agenda here: https://docs.google.com//1UXhZjd3NQUd-HV5hCg8YkY9erj/edit And, as at every board meeting, there is a time for public comment. If you want to share your views or concerns about any of the agenda items, you can join the Zoom meeting (link in the agenda above) and use the "Q&A" function to let the clerk of the board know you wish to speak. You can also share your thoughts with me directly at [email protected].
It’s not too late to restart your education! Lots of good links below.
I will be attending the Los Rios Community College District board meeting tonight at 5:30. This month's agenda is light; I will push for more substantive discussion of enrollment declines and outreach to our community's young adults at our next board meeting. You can listen in (and contribute to public comment) by using the link at the top of the agenda: https://losrios.edu//doc/board/2021/20210113-bot-agenda.pdf.
Happy to join a meeting between Florin High School counselors and administrators and Cosumnes River College outreach specialists this morning. We are all working toward the same goal: giving Panthers a "warm hand-off" that leads to success in CRC transfer and career education programs.
Classes start next week! West Sacramento and Davis students: consider taking part in this week’s activities to get you off on the right foot at Sac City.
