Man O man, some appointments just get me in the heart and the gut. This is my friend/ client’s mama, she has recently moved to the area after basically surviving hell. It’s her story so I won’t tell it, but it left me feeling extremely grateful for my health and all the wonderful pieces of my life. This past year has been really hard on so many of us, but some of us were dealing with other difficulties and COVID just piled on like . I absolutely love the opportunity to slay a blonde look on a first time client..... it quite literally makes me swoon. This lovely soul was a referral and we had the best time talking about life - parenting- the pandemic- you name it. And all the while I’m hilighting away trying to make some magic. It was a super long appointment, because like many people it had been a while since she had her hair done and we had a ton of ground to cover. The good things is, her last stylist... did an excellent job and her grow out was natural. I’m working on 14 years with this guy and I am stunned that he gets more handsome each year. We just spent a week camping at the beach and had the best time. Often I have a new client sit down and say-I’m too blonde, I feel washed out and I hate my hair. This happens because they are being hilighted each and every visit and all the depth/ dimension has left the building. The art/ skill of hilighting is not just performing the service but understanding when to not hilight. It’s extremely important to understand where depth is needed and to put depth in or use their natural color for depth. On clients that are graying the d...epth needs to be added, the question is where. This is where having a skilled colorist standing behind your chair is your biggest advantage. As a colorist I don’t just practice techniques- I spend an equal amount of time understanding skin tone/ complimentary tone. I’ve learned where a low light is most beneficial and how it can make a hilight pop. On this super adorable Grammy she needed more color and less hilight for this very reason. I loved our visit and she was glowing with joy when she left. The next day I received a lovely message from her daughter raving about her hair and then another regarding how much her husband loves it. Man oh man I have all the feels. The thing is, her color wasn’t complicated but it was completely off for her skin tone. She had been lightened so may times it had become monochromatic. We made to the beach and this is where we will be for the next week my child is over the moon. We have some NKOTB! And I am thrilled to see the shade additions for this incredible treatment. I primarily used this treatment for blondes and now there is a little somethin’ for everyone. If you’ve never used this little slice of heaven you are missing out. It makes my hair feel incredibly soft and I find myself petting my hair when finished . The cool thing about this toning mask is the smoothing ingredients, it has panthenol and hydrolized keratin. These ingredie...nts are often used in cosmetic and hair care products to create a smooth shiny finish. I gloss every client, every time. I don’t believe in leaving hair in it’s raw lifted state, so I gloss. But glosses shift and wear off over time. They can do so more quickly based on your home routine, so it’s not uncommon to come in for a gloss in between color appointments. Or..... you can do it at home. This is what I do, mostly because I get two things accomplished at one time. I am able to refresh my gloss and I give my hair the moisture it so desperately needs. Let’s talk dirty..... do you see this?! This is the water after I treated my hair with Pretreat. Feel free to swipe and see the crystal clear water from before the treatment. This murky water is from the minerals and crap in our tap water. This is what sits on our hair shaft making a negative impact. No wonder, blonde-ing doesn’t always lift enough, no wonder hair color doesn’t always take. As a colorist I ask a ton of questions during a consultation- and often we talk... water, medications, hormones- you name it. For me, I’m trying to get a good picture of what’s potentially sitting on your hair shaft and what do I need to account for. So as of late I’ve started asking clients to treat their hair prior to coming in- it gives us a clean canvas and removes some of the typical barriers. I’m always happy to do the treatment at the salon, but doing it at home does save some precious time. So if you are a color client and we haven’t talked about this please feel free to ask. This is one of my favorite at home treatments. I sprayed my hair down with pretreat, wrapped it up and capped it, let sit for 30 minutes, dipped in this bowl several times and then shampooed and did a toning mask. My hair is the happiest it’s been in a while. I also want to note that I had already shampooed my hair before I used Pretreat, this is what came from clean hair. If you are someone that experiences your hi lights not lifting bright enough, or your color not taking this could be the issue and your don’t even know it. This sweet miss was lightened using foil and a simple zig zag pattern, I did back to backs in the front for a pop of brightness. She was shadow rooted / glossed, and received two treatments. When your friend drives 6 hours round trip to get her done..... you do it right. I’m watching a ton of my friends move out of state for various reasons and while it’s incredibly sad I’m thrilled I still get to see many of them for their hair appointments.
