FRAUD ALERT As if restaurants and small businesses weren't having a hard enough time already: We received a request through our website asking if we catered, do we take credit cards, and were we available Feb 6th. Us: "Yes, yes, yes. Call us to discuss." Scammer: "Oh. I'm in hospital after ear surgery, but I need 100 chicken salads for my mom's surprise birthday party, but give me the price and I'll send you my credit card info, I'm ready to pay right now, and I'll ...send a driver that day at noon to pick it up." "Us thinking: "Hmm.., a party for 100 people during Covid? Send a driver? Sounds fishy." Us to potential client: "So sorry, but for that size order we need cash, or pay in person with ID." Scammer via email next day: "Here's a copy of my driver's license, and I'll need you to add $1750 to the tab, so you can pay the driver in person, because they are not set up to take credit cards. I'll give you some extra money for your trouble" Us to scammer: No thank you! Apparently this is a common technique to scam small businesses: 1) Contact through website, with sob story about being in hospital. 2) Want rush order and pay via (stolen) credit card. 3) Request to pay extra, and victim then pay out some money. EESH!!!
