For anyone who is wondering about what is being planned for a service/paddle out for Katy, here’s a message from Joey, her son. Be sure to send some love his way!

UPDATE (1/27): WE’RE BACK! Everyone’s results came back negative, and everyone is healthy and doing well. Thanks for the words of encouragement and support as we sorted through things over the last week! - PJ UPDATE (1/23): Pending additional test results, we will be closed through the weekend. Aside from the initial employee who tested positive for COVID, everyone seems healthy with no symptoms whatsoever. Barring any unexpected developments, we are looking to reopen either ...Monday or Wednesday of this coming week. If that changes for any reason, we’ll let you know. Thanks for all the support! - PJ Hey everyone, Last night (Tuesday 1/19) we were informed that an employee tested positive for COVID. They were not feeling sick or showing symptoms, but came into contact ELSEWHERE with someone who found out they had been exposed and subsequently got tested out of precaution, meaning they know where they were exposed and that it was not here at the cafe. As a precaution for our community and to give us some space to figure out how to proceed, we are VOLUNTARILY closing the cafe for at least a few days as we consult the San Diego County Health Department for their guidance to move forward safely. Again, this is a VOLUNTARY closure. While we follow county policy and procedures for cleaning and distance to maintain our customer’s safety, we recognize that a fair portion of our local regulars are part of at-risk demographics for COVID-19 and are doing extra to make sure that they stay safe. In case you haven’t had the chance to make your ornament in rememberance of Katy, we’ll have the station up for a few more days! Once it all gets packed up, the notes all go into a scrapbook for her son Joey. Stop by before the end of the weekend if you can! Hello everyone! I just wanted to introduce myself and present what we have arranged to honor Katy in this season. My name is PJ, and I took over Katy’s Cafe a few months ago to allow Katy to transition into retirement and let her enjoy her golden years (as she put it). The transfer started mid-summer and finished in the beginning of September, when we opened the cafe back up Labor Day weekend. Since we reopened, I’ve come to a new understanding on how great our community is... and developed a new appreciation for how strong Katy was for building the cafe up to what it has become over the last 14-odd years. I would have introduced myself sooner here, but we only recently gained access to the Facebook page thanks to the assistance of Kim Austin, Katy’s long time friend and a wonderful soul. In case you have not heard, I am sad to inform you of Katy’s passing this last weekend. There is very little information being provided at this time as the family processes this tremendous loss. For now, many have approached us, the family, and her closest friends on any plans for a memorial or some other way to grieve as a community and honor her memory/legacy. A paddle out is in the works, and we will share details as they become available. In the meantime, Kim, Shvonne, and myself have worked out a way that we can immortalize some of our memories of Katy and provide a gift to her son Joey at the same time. The post attached below is from a Facebook Page arranged by Kim dedicated to Katy. I would highly encourage you to check the page out, join, and share a photo or a story as you are willing/able. The post, written by Kim, lays out our plans to honor Katy’s memory. We understand many might be uncomfortable to contribute due to COVID-19, and if that is you, we would love to see your memories and well wishes here or on the Katy’s Amazing Memories Facebook page. If you need to process or just want to talk things through with someone, feel free to stop by and pull me aside. She was my friend too. If you need to just stop by and walk through the cafe to reminisce, feel free to do so as well (but I do request that we still practice social distancing and other COVID related health orders/best practices. Afternoons tend to be slower, if that helps). And although we do appreciate your support, DO NOT feel obligated to purchase anything if you just want to stop by, process, and/or contribute to the ornamental memoire. We are thankful for your continued support and know that many of you feel the connection to this amazing woman through the cafe she created. We are committed to carrying on her spirit through our service, our coffee, and most importantly, our connection to the IB community. Best Regards, PJ
