The story how jazz became the most important thing to me I’ve been in love with jazz music since I’ve been a little girl. I was drawn to this music as an infant. Jazz and American records were still hard to come by in the waning years of the Soviet Union, but I soaked up my father’s albums by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. I studied mostly classical music throughout my teens, and after moving to St Petersburg proper started singing in clubsmostly blues and standar...ds. By age 21, i become a savvy bandleader, having performed regularly at the American-owned Red Lion Blues Club and year lattes I performed with The Old-Fashioned Blues Band, spending six years touring and performing in Moscow and all around Russia and Ukraine. I worked up my performing chops but always wanted to learn more, so I attended St Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts delving into harmony, studying music theory, listening to records, and watching YouTubeNancy Wilson, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, and Ella Fitzgerald. And that was the time when my passion about jazz has really begun. I organized my Katy Moon Jazz Band with whom I was successfully performing in Russia for a 5 years. Having met bassist Gary Brown in 2013, I decided to try out New York City, and spent a month there, making the rounds of the clubs and learning more about jazz. Gary invited me out here to the Bay Area in 2015, where i found a rich and diverse musical community, where I recorded my Mirror", is a sampling of both my Russian heritage and my love of the American songbook, as well asthanks to @garybrownbass GaryBrazilian music.
