Back when Aunty G and Tyana had to dance during shows it’s amazing to see how far Kalakeke has come. Seeing the different seasons of people come and go, all t...he performances, dances and songs, and of course the learning. I think the biggest lesson was that you can’t be afraid to try. We may have never been the biggest school and we definitely still have so much to learn but we’ve always just went out there and tried. We did our very first Ho’olaule’a with only 5 legit students (not counting Aunty G and Tyana), had only Uncle Kin to drum and play, and even had to switch out dancers to play something when they weren’t dancing. We could have easily been intimidated and compared ourselves with other groups but we just said let’s do it ! Don’t hold yourselves back because you don’t feel ready because you’re comparing yourself to others or being afraid to fail. You’ve already failed by not trying. Happy #alohafriday ! It’s been almost a week and we are still recovering from the SCV Pacific Islander festival but out of the entire weekend, my favorite mom...ent was when one of the groups scheduled to perform couldn’t make it so all of the kalakeke volunteers were asked to come up and perform whatever they could for an hr! No drums, no costumes, no lineups, no rehearsal we jus played and dances the best we could even pulled our dances we haven’t done in years. Then after everyone picks up their jobs again It was my favorite performance because it was authentic. In our culture, when ur at a party or gathering and someone asks you to play or dance even if you are working you just do it no questions asked. I can’t explain it but it just shows the love and respect we have for the Polynesian culture. We work to make this happen and then amidst working we still play and dance. We do what we have to do and we don’t complain. Thank you volunteers for helping this weekend! Love u Kalakeke fam.
