From how to train a dog, to important life lessons like not to judge a book by its cover, the student-trainers who participate in K9YA programs learn many skills and principles while they help their dog-partners prepare to find their forever homes. Was there a time that taught you not to judge a book by its cover?

Today we celebrate shelter pets Shelter dogs hold a special place in our hearts, as the pups who participate in our programs come to us from local animal shelter partners. Through our program, we strive to provide these sweet doggos with the opportunity to live the happy life they deserve. We continue to advocate for their adoption after their time in program and being able to tell a potential adopter that a dog has worked with a young person in a group of other dogs goes a long way to getting them a second look and finding a family #CelebrateShelterPetsDay

Over the past several weeks, 17 super talented young members of the Boys & Girls Club Pasadena have been working hard with K9 Youth Alliance. They've learned about humane education, how to train dogs, and they've been teaching foster dog parents and parents of newly adopted shelter dogs skills to help their pups transition happily into home life. Join us on Zoom on Thursday, April 15th at 1:30 pm PST for a graduation celebration. These awesome 9-11-year-olds would love to sho...w you just what they and their dog-partners have learned! For more info or to RSVP for the Zoom link, email K9YA Program Director Sara at [email protected].

K9 Youth Alliance is proud to promote humane education through positive, rewards-based interactions between our student trainers and their shelter dog partners. During our programs, students learn about animal welfare, animal behavior, and animal rights. Furthermore, students develop many skills and principles as they work with their dogs, such as responsibility, empathy, respect, self-esteem, and an appreciation of diversity. Visit k9youthalliance.org to learn more about K9 Youth Alliance.

Every student in our Hybrid Program receives a lifelike stuffed dog of their own to practice cues on in anticipation of meeting their foster pup and foster parent on Zoom. This past week in program, we got to be introduced to each of the dogs. Here, we have Jennifer introducing us to her dog, Bella. The students love their stuffed pups and become quite attached to them Did you have a favorite stuffed animal as a kid that provided you with comfort and companionship? We'd love to hear about them! Today is #NationalPuppyDay, an international holiday celebrating puppies and encouraging pet adoption world-wide. This adorable puppy's name is Georgia and at her young age, she's already an international traveler. But Georgia's story, like too many others, could have turned out much different than it did. Things were looking pretty grim for Georgia's mom and siblings when Southern California based Mutt Scouts rescued them from a hard life on the streets of Tijuana. Local cou...ple Laura Smolowe and Adam O’Byrne had waited a long time before deciding it was time to add a pup to their family. They knew they wanted to adopt, so they visited several rescues online. One look at sweet Georgia's soulful eyes and the family fell in love. Now Georgia is safe and loved with Laura, Adam and their two young girls. She is getting everything she needs to grow into a healthy, happy dog - the perfect forever home for this perfect little fur baby. Are you considering bringing a puppy or dog into your home? Please consider adopting or fostering - there are so many homeless pets that would love to be a part of your family!

As our next Hybrid Program begins, we're excited to think of the relationships that will form between the K9YA pups and their student trainers. They may not be meeting in person, but the bonds they form are just as strong - just look at these cute flyers the kids made last program to bring awareness to their foster dog partners!

K9 Youth Alliance is passionate about giving homeless dogs the chance they deserve to live a happy life. We work with staff and volunteers at local shelters to identify dogs who may be a good fit for our program. There are sooo many great dogs who get overlooked at the shelter, so we aim include dogs who have been in the shelter for a long time and are not getting adoption or rescue interest.... Then our professional and compassionate team spends a couple of days at the shelter, providing the potential pups with an enriching experience while assessing them on a host of variables that emulate what they will experience in the program - we love all the pups we meet and wish we could include them all!

How often you should take your pet to the vet depends on their age and health. In general, if your pet is in good health, you should take your pet to the vet for a yearly wellness exam. Some pets, such as puppies and kittens, should see a vet monthly up until a certain age, while healthy senior pets should have semi-annual wellness exams.... If your pet is unwell then visiting the vet should happen more often and your vet will likely work with you on a schedule for vet visits. Of course, if there is an emergency with your pet, you should go to the vet right away. ___________________ This post is part of our Putting Pets First series honoring the life of not just one special pup, Spencer Nunn, who brought so much joy to his people, but to honor all of the sweet dogs, cats, and other critters we love! In this series, we’ll be sharing useful info on how we can all make sure we are taking the best possible care of our pets! #kidshelpingdogshelpingkids #responsiblepetownership
