Professor Margaret (Peggy) Stevenson has received a Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award from the CSU Chancellor's Office for her work as Director for the Record Clearance Project. Stevenson created the Record Clearance Project in 2008; since 2011 it has been formalized into three courses in the Justice Studies Department. Under Stevenson's supervision, undergraduates gain hands-on experience in the legal system while changing lives of those in their community. RCP has edu...cated more than 11,000 community members on expungement law and employment rights of people with convictions, filed over 1,400 expungement petitions to court, and provided over 1,400 individual interviews to advise people of their next steps in clearing their records. RCP volunteers have delivered over 75,000 uncompensated hours of service. Selected from 366 nominations, Stevenson was one of 26 recipients in the CSU system. Stevenson is redirecting her $5,000 award to help fund RCP. The Department of Justice Studies is enormously proud of Peggy and the Record Clearance Project! Today is Juneteenth-- a holiday in the U.S. that recognizes the abolishment of slavery in Texas in 1865, officially ending slavery in the U.S. It is a time of celebration and reflection for not only the African-American community but the nation as well. Slavery was abolished 153 years ago and the ramifications of it along with the ideologies behind it still permeate our society today. The activists of that time paved the way so freedom could be a reality. We celebrate them for their dedication and bravery, and we celebrate those who are ensuring equality and justice for their communities today. Happy Juneteenth, everyone! _ Q: Activists are the change makers of the world. Who is an activist that you admire?
