Junior League of San Jose 01.02.2021

During Black History Month, the Junior League of San Jose will highlight and recognize Black women who contributed to American History. We recommend you take the time to research each of these women and their accomplishments. Remember that Black History is American History. Condoleezza Rice is an American diplomat, political scientist, civil servant, and professor who is currently the Hoover Institution’s Director at Stanford University. She was the first African-American woman to serve as the US National Security Adviser and US Secretary of State. She was also the first African-American female to hold the position of provost at Stanford University. #BlackHistoryMonth #JLSJ #JLSJDEI #juniorleague

"I joined the Junior League the same month I was married. In fact, I missed my very first meeting because I was on my honeymoon. To me, the Junior League signified me entering into my adult life. I had just purchased my first home, I was newly married and now I needed to figure out what type of woman I wanted to be as I grew older and raised my family. I was no stranger to charity organizations, being a member of the National Charity League for years as a teenager and bein...g part of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority at Chapman University. Those experiences gave me a love of volunteer coordination, and the Junior League allowed me to showcase my talents of creative writing, spearheading events and public speaking at conventions both small and large. I held various positions in my time with the league, however my favorite position was co-chairing the PR & Recruiting Committee alongside my sister, Lindsay Zimmer. As part of that position we led the Open Houses to recruit new members. I've had a few members tell me over the years that what we told them at those open houses convinced them to join the League. I take a lot of pride in that. The League has helped me develop into a confident woman and mother. I remember the day my oldest daughter watched her mom walk up on stage and be honored for all the dedicated hours and work it took to go Sustaining. That's a moment I'll never forget, and if I was able to convince another woman to take this same path and possibly achieve that same wonderful moment, I consider that work well done." #jlsj #juniorleagueofsanjose #membershipspotlight

@Billwilsonctr has been providing services to runaway and homeless youth since 1973 and worked with youth to create @the_hubsanjose community center to support current and former foster youth here in San Jose. JLSJ continues to support BWC and The Hub with financial contributions through our Community Grants program, where we gave $5000 in 2020, and provided essential volunteer hours. We are excited to continue our partnership into the next year and work together to provide a safe and welcoming space for foster youth in our community! #JLBetterTogether #JLGives #JLSJ #JuniorLeagueofSanJose #JLSJGives #JuniorLeague #TripleYourImpact #CommunityPartners

"I joined the Junior League of San Jose in 1998 to be with like-minded women, give back to my community, and be a part of something bigger than myself. Being in the League provided me with exceptional leadership training, made me aware of my community’s needs and showed me how I could directly help those in need. The most priceless thing I gained from the Junior League of San Jose was lifelong friendships made from so many opportunities provided by the League. It is these Le...ague connections that have made me a better person by pushing me to do things I never imagined I would have been able to do. The League is more than a volunteer organization; it really is another home. A place where I can take risks, grow my relationships and connections, and evolve my personal potential beyond what I could have ever imagined. For this, I am eternally grateful for all the League has given me. Thank you for giving me another home and pushing me to be the best version of myself." #membershipmonday #jlsj #juniorleagueofsanjose #bettertogether #bewelldogood

Creating a sense of community for foster youth helps to heal trauma and avoid poverty. First Place for Youth works to provide that community, and so much more. FPY moves foster youth from unstable living conditions to affordable housing where they can build a foundation for lifelong self sufficiency. Junior League of San Jose is proud to partner with such an incredible and impactful organization. We strive to contribute to the sense of community they create for their transitional age foster youth by giving our time to support community events, putting together care packages, and support as these young people look into applying for jobs and working on their career. #JLBetterTogether #JLGives #JLSJ #JuniorLeagueofSanJose #JLSJGives #JuniorLeague #TripleYourImpact #CommunityPartners

"Junior League has empowered me in so many ways. Prior to joining the League, I was much more of an introvert. With the training I received, I felt empowered to be more open socially. I expanded my horizon by Chairing Fundraisers. The success of these Events gave me the additional confidence I needed to take my training to my children’s schools and the greater community. The biggest bonus is the lasting friendships I have made."

"The Junior League of San Jose has given me so much: a network of friends and professional contacts; training I have used in the League, for other community causes, and even my professional work; opportunities to try new skills with mentors ready to help me through any learning curve; and decades long friendships. Because I said yes to leadership, my networks, training, mentors and friendships have been expanded throughout the Northern California, the western states, nationally and even internationally. It has been one of the most fulfilling and empowering volunteer experiences in my life."

There are unique barriers to voting experienced by survivors of intimate partner violence. From fear of potential retaliation to privacy concerns, some survivors face a unique set of obstacles that prevent them from making their voices heard at the voting booth. Since 1999, the state of California has run the Safe at Home program to ensure that victims of domestic violence and human trafficking have a mailing address that enables them to vote by mail confidentially. "I had been wanting to join the league for many years, but being a single mom to two kiddos at that time put JL on the back burner. At a very tumultuous time in my life 2009/2010, I lost both parents to cancer within 5 months of each other. I wanted to honor my parents in some way. They had been volunteering in different causes my entire life. They usually took their involvement to the second and third level and were typically on BODs. From PTA board, to softball league coach... then to BOD of the league, and so on. They were super involved. My mom used to tell us that San Jose Family Camp was my dad's mistress (he was heavily involved in Friends of Family Camp and was one of its founders). I had big shoes to fill and knew that the Junior League of San Jose was perfect for me. Doing things for others definitely helped in my grief journey. My first year Active, I chose Hospitality for Trivia Challenge and met many wonderful ladies. My second year they asked me to co-chair the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. I was very humbled because I had never attended the event before. I was an event planner and had no doubt on that aspect, but VRL was a lot more than planning an event. Then my volunteer bug was really growing. My third year was my Membership co-chair year, then followed by Leadership co-chair my fourth year. Right about this time I was dealing with my sister being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and my being tested positive for the BRCA1 genetic mutation. I took a step back my 5th year because that year I had a hysterectomy and was on the E&A committee. Year six I was on the Membership Committee. I took a double placement that year to be on the 50th Anniversary Celebration committee and that was a two year placement. My final committee as an active member was Rummage Sale and, of course, I did Hospitality. My final year, 2016/2017 was when I decided to move forward with the second step of my BRCA1 situation and I had a Double Mastectomy/Reconstruction. I had 3 surgeries total that year and had the most supportive village around me with the JLSJ ladies. Between the Rummage Sale and the 50th Celebration, my committees were the most loving and supportive I could have asked for. The reason I included my parent's passing and my sister's cancer and my BRCA1 journey here is for two reasons. 1.) The ladies in Junior League are the most amazing, supportive, loving women who will be there for you as much as you are there for them. Being in JLSJ literally got me through my journey. 2.) I believe that knowledge is power when it comes to our bodies. I had decided to go through all of the procedures I did because I researched BRCA1 and knew my odds. I want to be an open book to all ladies and would share what I went through with my procedures with anyone who asks. Side note- My sister hit her 5 year Cancer Free mark and is officially in remission. True Miracle!" See more

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Intimate partner violence affects millions of people in the United States and around the world each year. Data from the CDC’s National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) indicate that in the U.S., about 1 in 4 women and nearly 1 in 10 men have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime. Join us throughout the month as we share information and resources about this important issue. #DVAM2020 #DVAM #JLBetterTogether #JLSJ
