Arturo Sosa, S.J., the Superior General of the Jesuits and therefore Chancellor of JST, has appointed Fr. Sean O. Carroll the new head of the USA West Province of the Society of Jesus. As the provincial of Jesuits West, Fr. Carroll will become a member of the JST Board of Directors. We are proud to note that Fr. Carroll is an alum of JST and are grateful for his service as the executive director of the Kino Border Initiative over the past decade. We also take this moment to express our gratitude to Fr. Scott Santarosa, current Provincial of Jesuits West, who has served JST very well on our board of directors since 2014.

The faculty at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University stood in solidarity this week with the thousands of faculty members at colleges, universities, seminaries, and divinity schools around the United States who participated in #ScholarStrike on September 8th and 9th. This two-day action and teach-in was meant to underscore the urgent importance of addressing the grave injustices faced by people of color in the United States. Being committed to enlivening fa...ith, promoting reconciliation, laboring for justice, and participating in God’s mercy, the JST faculty were proud to take part in this action and to voice their support for students who did the same. The JST faculty participated in this action in various ways this week, including re-orienting course syllabi toward issues of racial justice, offering updated assignments that center these issues, directing students toward online resources for race and theology, and discussing a follow-up teach-in on racial justice later in the academic year.

Professor Julie Rubio and Professor Paul Schutz from Santa Clara's Religious Studies Department received a grant from Fordham University’s Curran Center for American Catholic Studies as a part of the Taking Responsibility project, a multi-faceted study that aims to explore the relationship between the structures of Roman Catholic and Jesuit institutions of secondary and higher education and the phenomena of clergy sexual abuse and its systematic concealment. Through this research, Professors Rubio and Schutz seek to understand both how structural clericalism operates and how seminaries and other institutions might take steps to undo and counter these structures. We stand in solidarity with our international students. The international character of our academic community is fundamental to how we approach and study theology at JST through a culturally contextualized perspective. As stated by our Assistant Dean of Enrollment, Drew Roberts, in his op-ed for America Magazine, Our community, our church, our worldwe all reap the benefits of the brilliance and passion that international students bring. https://www.americamagazine.org//trying-rescind-student-vi
