We love when campus staff and faculty reach out to learn more about energy issues and habits. Recently, staff from the Athletics Department contacted our engineers to determine what effect covering Schaal Pool at night had on energy savings. After some modeling, we found out the habit saved a significant amount of energy and money! Great work @ucdavisaggies and keep it up! #joulesthecow #ucdavis #JoulesEnergySavingSaturday #energyefficiency #energy #savings
Level 10 of Trim the Waste is all about how YOU can save energy! Swipe to check out some tips we recommend. #joulesthecow #savings
We are offering a Zero Net Energy course this spring!!! Learn more: HTTPS://PIET.UCDAVIS.EDU/ZEROENERGY
Make it a goal to incorporate these energy and water saving tips into your dishwashing habits! 1. Run full loads 2. Air dry when possible. This saves about 15% of your dishwasher's total energy use! 3. Wipe, don't rinse, before loading dishwasher. Modern dishwashers can handle debris on your plates and utensils without rinsing
The Campus Energy Education Dashboard lets users interact with campus energy data. CEED has taken many forms throughout the years, which you can see on Level 9 of Trim the Waste! #TrimtheWasteWednesday #joulesthecow #dataanalysis
Did you know your washer and dryer use the most energy out of all your appliances? To reduce energy use, try incorporating these tips into your washer/dryer habits!
This awesome energy-saving project was spearheaded by ECO intern, Tohami. The ventilation in Cole B can now be manually adjusted by people on-site thanks to a control panel designed by Tohami. #JoulesEnergySavingSaturday #joulesthecow #animals #energy #savings
Building type and HVAC controls play a big role in energy savings, which are modeled by our engineers. Swipe to learn more or check out Level 8 of Trim the Waste! #TrimtheWasteWednesday #joulesthecow #savings
Today's MOOgoal is about your thermostat! Thermostat settings control the amount of energy it takes to heat and cool a room. You can see on Maya's thermostat that setpoints cause the heating or air conditioning systems to turn on. Higher cooling setpoints and lower heating set points means you conserve energy by delaying when the systems kick in. The Setpoint Savings Calculator by the Center for the Built Environment and Building Robotics at UC Berkley estimates that raising the cooling setpoint +3F would save approximately 22% in cooling energy! Make it a goal to check your thermostat settings, especially as the seasons change.
Investments in two innovative clean energy projects in California bring the UC system nearly halfway to its ambitious clean energy objectives while reducing costs. The projects, a new biogas plant and a utility-scale solar array, will help power all UC campuses. We're excited that these clean energy sources are being added to our campus energy portfolio! https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu//investments-new-ca
ECO intern, Tohami, recently completed an energy project that will save UCD up to $6,000/year! Swipe to check out his creative solutions. #JoulesEnergySavingSaturday #joulesthecow #internship #student

Earlier this summer our Controls Engineer, Petar, reprogrammed two huge air handling units at Mrak to allow their pressure setpoints to change based on the needs of the building. Check out the huge reduction from running at 95-100% fan speed to running at 65% speed most of the time. Small changes can make a big difference!
Kristen and Cheyanne, students from the Zero Net Energy course, developed six creative ideas to engage students in energy education. One idea is a quiz about Shields paired with an interactive entry on TherMOOstat. Another is a tabling event with information about HVAC systems, campus comfort, and efficiency improvements in Shields. Comment below with any ideas you have on how to spread the word about campus energy efficiency!
A green building operates in a way that reduces its environmental impact. When pursuing green building certifications, we look at building features and operational impacts such as: -Energy conservation -Indoor & outdoor water efficiency -Waste reduction -Indoor air quality... -Sustainable purchasing See more
This is Trim the Waste | Home Edition, where we bring you energy saving content from our own homes and talk about these concepts on a larger scale at UC Davis. Today on Trim the Waste | Home Edition we're talking with graduate student researcher Devon Schmidt. She's going to walk us through programming your thermostat for energy savings.
