To say its been a complicated, unnerving, stressful and confusing in #joshuatree would be an understatement. Below is a bulleted list of the last 2 weeks of events viewed through the lens of Cliffhanger Guides. Tuesday March 10th: Cancellations due to Covid -19 started trickling in to our admin staff. Friday March 13th: This was our black Friday. Roughly 15 cancellations. Brutal day. This is also the day the federal government declared a National Emergency. ... Monday March 16th: The writing was on the wall. Social distancing was now a normal term in the average vocabulary. This day we chose to close Cliffhanger for all trips and consequently had to lay off 12 people. Thursday March 19th: California Governor issues a Shelter in Place Order. Effectively shutting the state down for all non-essential commerce and travel. Friday March 20th: #joshuatreenationalpark announces that the park will be closing to all vehicle traffic, though foot and bike day use will still be permitted. Sabra begins construction of the Tetanus Garden. #victorygarden Saturday March 21st: Park blvd. at the West Entrance has vehicles backed up nearly a mile parking everywhere. Park blvd. residents said it was overwhelming with people trespassing, relieving themselves, trampling the desert, camping etc. Mind you, this is not the National Park, this is private property. Sunday March 22. Park visitors are still coming though numbers are decreasing. This is also the day we released the #staythefuckhome graphic. The energy in Joshua Tree was really heavy this day. All of us feeling very uncertain and scared and it continued to feel like half the world was taking this very seriously, while the other half was flouting the disease and flocking to the desert and mountains to recreate putting all communities at risk. Tuesday March 24th: Construction is completed on the Tetanus Garden, planting begins. All this to say, we shall not soon forget the past 2 weeks or this wholistic period of our lives. For now, we are settling in at the #sethspool, implementing safety protocols, working together on projects, and trying to stay healthy and positive. Hugs and love to each and every one of you! COVID-19 refugees from out of town continue to converge on Joshua Tree National Park. Understandably being cooped up in the city is maddeningly unappealing during stressful and uncertain times. It's that time of year again. Cliffhanger Guides proudly sponsors Chicks with Nuts. An all women's trad and multi-pitch climbing weekend designed and led by our very own most amazing Kelly Fields.
