Don't Let Illness Or Injury Add To The Cost Of Your Trip With the school season ending in much of the country, many people will travel internationally for their summer vacations. But did you know that if you require medical services in another country, your passport can be confiscated until full payment is received for those services? Severe situations requiring medical evacuation and repatriation could cost tens of thousands of dollars, yet many Americans who travel abroad do not have Travel Medical coverage for such instances. Both the U.S Department of State1 and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention2 comment on the importance of Travel Medical coverage for Americans traveling internationally. 1 https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/go/health.html 2 http://www.cdc.gov/features/travelhealthinsurance/

Real-World Story: Just a quick text Ashley and her BFF, Andrea, felt lucky to work together and would often carpool, like they did the evening of their weekly d...inner with friends from college. Ashley couldn't remember what time they were supposed to meet, so she decided to send a quick text to check. With her eyes focused on her phone, Ashley didn't see the two bicyclists in the crosswalk until it was too late. Both cyclists sustained serious injuries, including head trauma, lung collapse, broken ribs and multiple major fractures. Andrea was not wearing her seat belt and suffered a severe head injury, requiring hospitalization and rehabilitation. After Ashley's auto liability limits were exhausted, she was held personally responsible for all outstanding medical bills. Since she did not have significant assets, this meant her future earnings would be garnished until the bills were settled. Claim: $625,000 If she had a standalone personal umbrella policy, it would have responded for the full amount. Policies start at $253/year for $1 MM of coverage.

The National Safety Council states Vehicle Deaths Increase by Largest Percent in 50 Years The estimate is subject to slight increases or decreases as data mature. NSC has issued annual traffic fatality estimates since 1921. Over the last three years, preliminary estimates have fallen within 1% of final counts. While many factors likely contributed to the fatality increase, a stronger economy and lower unemployment rates are likely at the core of the trend. Average gas prices... were 28% lower in 2015 than in 2014 and are projected to continue dropping this year,[ii] making driving more affordable for many Americans. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates a 3.5% increase in the number of miles driven in 2015 compared to 2014[iii]. To help ensure safety, the Council recommends drivers: Make sure every passenger buckles up on every trip Designate an alcohol- and drug-free driver or arrange alternate transportation Get plenty of sleep and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue Never use a cell phone behind the wheel, even hands-free Stay engaged in teens' driving habits, as teens are three times as likely to crash as more experienced drivers. I know it is rare to see water falling from the sky, but it is happening, so please drive safe and give yourself extra time to get to where you are going and leave extra space between vehicles. Also, please eliminate distractions, such as texting, while driving. http://www.textinganddrivingsafety.com/texting-and-driving-

Fall is here, but the fire season is still in full effect with 10 active fires burning in the state. Please make sure you have defensible space. This helps you and your neighbors. In January 2005 a new state law became effective that extended the defensible space clearance around homes and structures from 30 feet to 100 feet. Proper clearance to 100 feet dramatically increases the chance of your house surviving a wildfire. This defensible space also provides for firefighter ...safety when protecting homes during a wildland fire. http://calfire.ca.gov/com/communications_firesafety_100feet
