Bridgeport is open and welcoming. The smoke is very mild and the leaves are starting to turn. Such a great time to come visit. The weather is perfect with warm days and cool nights. www.bridgeportcalifornia.com

Former site of Bryant Store now Jolly Kone Amasa F. Bryant built his 2nd store at this site in 1866, adjoined by his 160 acre ranch land. Bryant was an early s...ettler of Bridgeport. He was instrumental in laying out the townsite and donated land for many uses. He built the town's 1st store on Court St in 1863 and was the 1st postmaster in Bridgeport. Amasa also operated a store in Bodie until 1881. His son Amasa S. (known as Ammi) took over the Bridgeport store in 1899. Ammi pioneered electrical and telephone line construction and operating communications to outlying camps from the store. Ammi converted the telegraph equipment and lines to provide the first telephone service in the county. Most of the 320 miles of phone lines were strung on willow poles and fence posts. When phone wire was scarce he substituted barbed wire. Lines were run to Bodie, Aurora, Masonic and the Dunderberg Mine which made Bridgeport a communication center for the surrounding mining camps. The main telephone switch board was located in the Bryant Store next to the cash register were Ammi and his wife Nellie would alternate between selling goods and plugging in phone connections. Ringing bells were used instead of flashing lights to alert them when subscribers wanted to place calls. A fire in 1963 burned down the store and the Jolly Kone (bakery and bank) was built. The Jolly Kone is still owned and operated by a Bryant, Lynda Pemberton (Bryant).
