I like to create cohesive, accessible and pleasant-to-the-eye art pieces. However, because of the influence of my ancestors, every piece has multiple uses and layers of meaning and symbolism. I enjoy being experimental and innovative with the function and purpose of my work as well as with the juxtaposition of ancient symbolism and modern practicality. As part of CMATO’s upcoming international juried exhibition, Defining Beauty, we are pleased to present artwork by the st...udents of our jurors, including mixed media artist Yenelli Law, known for her symbolism, bold colors and surrealist imagery. "Roberts' process involves compiling internet- and magazine-sourced portrait fragments, which she layers and combines with hand-painted details to create striking figurative amalgams on paper and canvas. Empowered yet fractured, celebratory yet critical, her portraits confront systematic racism, stereotyping and societal beauty standards." A few spots remain for our Artist Workshop: Deborah Roberts Figure Collage on Saturday, February 27 at 2:00 PM on Zoom. Admission is free but pre-registration is required. I exploit visual tools including negatives, highly saturated color notes and diffused lighting adjacent to suffused lighting in order to create reflexive vision in the viewer. Artist Zara Monet Feeney’s dynamic works feature fragments of the female form, shifting and altering the straightforward ways in which paintings are typically received. The illusory experience she creates is both complex and colorful, and it is within this space that the puzzling prowess of her paint...ings deliver a chasmal spectrum of transparency, opacity, and all the splendor in between. Feeney is the featured artist in CMATO’s upcoming international juried art exhibition, Defining Beauty, on view in late 2020. Reopening information will be announced soon! The Memory Project gives voice to the individual members who make up a community. People living and working in their communities carry the life, personality and essence of those spaces. Life experiences and the memories we hold shape who we are and how we experience the world. Though we are neighbors living and working side by side, we don’t always know one another. Given the rapid pace and demands of life it is not often that we have an opportunity to sit down and listen to... one another, and be heard ourselves. Created by artist Christine Aaron, The Memory Project aims to bring people together through the sharing of memories. Memories are written on specialty paper and woven into a beautiful, evolving visual art installation. The resulting work represents a joining of voices, where both participants and viewers can read and share with one another in the spirit of community. The Memory Project will be on view at CMATO in late 2020. We invite you to contribute a memory to this powerful and moving installation once we reopen, and add your story to ours! Flashback to our 2019 Empathy: Beneath the Surface group exhibition featuring contemporary artist, Simphiwe Ndzube. Inspired by moments in his childhood and his experience in post-apartheid South Africa, Ndzube infuses his oeuvre with magical elements and legends while drawing from different aspects of African history, particularly social and political events. His work tells a story that is distinctly relevant in today’s world. Nicodim Gallery #fbf #MuseumFromHome Pictured: Simphiwe Ndzube, The Purging (diptych), 2018.

My immediate need is to paint the essence of being in the moment. Digital artist Francene Levinson creates stunning visual illusions and designs, inspired by the environment and human experience. Her paintings are original abstract manipulations of digital pixels that reveal the essence of forms, lines and space within well-balanced, dynamic compositions. Levinson is one of three featured artists in CMATO’s upcoming international juried exhibition, Defining Beauty, on view ...later this year. Stay with us for reopening dates! The Memory Project is the creation of New York-based artist Christine Aaron. Aaron’s artistic practice is inspired by time, memory and the fragility of human connection. Her influences are especially poignant as our communities face increased isolation due to COVID-19. The Memory Project invites community members to share a significant memory, be it funny, somber, happy or painful. Each memory provides an opportunity for recognition, laughter, compassion and validation. M...emories written on strips of gampi paper by participants, coated in wax and then suspended on invisible threads from the ceiling to create a beautiful memory waterfall. Participants may also write memories on cards of printmaking paper that are incorporated into the installation. The resulting artwork represents a joining of voices, where both participants and the audience can read and share one another’s memories. You can read more about The Memory Project at www.thememoryproject.space. Once CMATO reopens, we hope you will contribute your voice to this powerful and moving installation!
