Many people have asked me about my long distance ride around the USA, so here are a few details: It was 21,475 miles and I rode in 27 states. I flew my bike, a ...Harley-Davidson Road King, from London, England (where I live) to New York City for the start of the tour. It took 4.5 months to do the ride and I finished in Los Angeles in California. When I finished, I put my bike on a boat back to the UK. I started the ride at the end of June and finished mid-October. I saw the beauty of the northern states in the summer and rode in the desert states after the very high temperatures of the summer were gone. I only got rained on twice. I was so lucky! I did the tour on my own, but a friend came to join me for two weeks in New England and my wife joined me for 10 days in Arizona. Yes, she is very understanding of my need to travel and explore! The state I rode the most in was Arizona, where I did 3,460 miles. Second was Colorado at 2,716 miles. The areas I enjoyed riding in the most were: New England Colorado Southern Utah and Arizona Monument Valley Yellowstone / The Tetons South Dakota Route 66 in AZ California Anywhere in the Rockies, because the roads are more twisty! What was my favorite road? For the sheer excitement, it was a gravel road called Moki Dugway, Highway 261 in Utah. Yes, I did go to Sturgis for the rally. It was pretty wild! I did pre-plan an outline route, but I changed it many times when riding. Yes, I did use a gps. Even though I wanted to mainly avoid big cities, I did go to New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Los Angeles. I am from London, so riding in cities holds no fears for me. I needed two new rear tires and one front on the tour. My bike was serviced en-route and the Harley-Davidson dealers I used bent over backwards to fit my bike in at very short notice. The bike was four years old when I did the tour and it ran like a dream, with no issues at all. There was only two days in four and a half months that I didn’t ride! Did I meet the police at all and did they pay any interest in my yellow license plate? No, not once. Did I meet anyone interesting on the tour? Yes, I met Jay Leno (and got a tour of his garage) plus Craig Vetter, who I had dinner with. Craig was the designer of the Triumph Hurricane and if course, the Windjammer motorcycle fairing. I took 25,000 photos on the tour. That averaged 182 photos per day. I have included a few with this post. I stayed in a mixture of hotels, motels, and B&B’s. I only pre-booked accommodation in Sturgis and in Las Vegas. Perhaps the most endearing thing about the tour, was the kindness and welcoming nature of the Americans I met. You are a very friendly bunch! Every evening, I would find somewhere to eat and normally sat at the bar in a restaurant and I spoke to whoever sat next to me. I never felt lonely once. I enjoyed the tour so much, I decided to write a book about it. I felt I needed to capture what I had achieved. The book is large format, coffee-table sized with 400 full color pages. The book has sold thousands of copies and is available at..... www.franceinamerica.co.uk/
