People ask me when they should talk to a federal agent if they are approached by a federal agent. The answer is never. You do not need to talk to your friendly neighborhood FBI or DEA agent, and you never should. If you are approached by an agent, the correct response is "I don't want to talk to you." If they tell you that you are under arrest, then tell them you do not want to speak with them without and attorney. It is important that you ask for an attorney.
