Japan plans to build the largest neutrino detector in history. The photo above is of Japan's Super-Kamiokande neutrino detector, which began operation in 1983. ...Now, construction for Japan's Hyper-Kamiokande (Hyper-K) neutrino detector is on track, after the cabinet approved the first 3.5-billion (USD $32-million) installment late last year. This new massive detector will hold 260,000 tonnes of watermore than 5x the amount contained by its sibling, the Super-Kamiokandeand will be built inside a man-made cavern. Hyper-K's enormous size will enable it to detect unprecedented numbers of neutrinos produced by various sources including cosmic rays, the Sun and beams artificially produced by an existing particle accelerator. Not only will it be catching neutrinos, it will be searching for the spontaneous decay of protons in atomic nuclei.
