Chapter # 46-----I was running MEAN GREEN pretty often, usually twice a month. By now, I was using Daeco Racing fuel. It was made in Long Bch, and Edelbrock had... 55 gallon drums delivered every month. There was no more Chevron Custom Supreme at the pumps. Too bad ! With all my connections I had through Edelbrock, I got plenty of help with things like free spark plugs from Art Christman ( Autolight ) and free oil from Valvoline ( they even delivered it right to my house ) My connection with Holley carburetors was a big help too. I was not getting any more sponsorship money , and Edelbrock did not pay for my parts any longer .Lucky for me, OCIR was only 15 miles away from my house in Huntington Beach . It took about three or four months after they did all the pictures for Hot Rod to come out in the magazine. I began getting offers to buy MEAN GREEN almost at once. I kept holding out, but finely, the offered price was just too good to refuse. The guy that wanted the car the most, flew out here to see the car, I took him with me to the track, so he could see it make some runs. After two runs, he was satisfied, so I sold him the car for 10,000 dollars. His name was also Joe ( co incidence ) He lived in the south east , South Carolina, I believe. We stayed in touch for a while, then I never heard from him again. That was one of the biggest MISTAKES of my entire life . More to come See more

Sold the Camero - Chapter # 36--- Good bye to the Camaro----I put my Camaro up for sale in the Drag New magazine. The first day it came out, I had ten peop...le say they wanted to buy it, The morning of the second day after the ad came out, I was woke up by someone at my front door who wanted to buy it.. He had cash in his hand, so the whole deal only took about one hour to load it up and then it was GONE forever ! Bottom line, I did not ask enough for it . DAM ! I had been thinking about the BB Chevys ever since the Pro Stock racers came out to test at Edelbrock . I went to my old sponsor's Chevy dealership to look at new Chevelles. I even took one home to show my wife.. It was a 375 HP, with the chambered exhaust, that sounded totally bitchen ! I was very impressed, and I almost bought it on the spot. It was that competition orange color but my wife hated the interior that came with it.. When I spoke to the owner of the dealership, he told me I should wait for the 1970 models to come out in September , because they would be completely new , redesigned body style. Since it would only be about six months away, I decided that is what I would do. As soon as the factory would accept new model orders. I placed my order for a 396 Super Sport Chevelle . I wanted bucket seats, but without the center council. I also did not want the skunk stripes down the hood and trunk .This was also the first year for the cowl injection cold air hood package. They usually came with black interior, but I wanted dark green , just to be different . My friend at the dealership just missed one one BIG FEATURE. Can you guess what it was ? Stay tuned ! See more

Chapter # 30-- My Camaro at the Winter Nationals--With only a few runs down the track, I head over to Pomona. It is very crowded and sort of unorganized.. I onl...y got to make one time trial run in the morning, and then one more late in the afternoon .In the morning, I ran a 11.05 at 126. Also exactly the same as at San Gabriel a few days before .My late afternoon run was going to be better, but I got all out of shape near the finish line, and rubbed against the guard rail. I hit it so hard, it moved my left front tire back about 5 or 6 inches. It bent the lower A-arm, and also bent some of the steering parts.. I was done for the weekend for sure.. What had happened, It broke a valve stem off the inner tube in one of the slicks, probably on the starting line. It did not go flat right away, but as soon as i shifted into high gear, the car got very squirrely I thought I could handle it, but when I side swiped the guard rail. it did so much damage, I knew I was done for .Back in those days, I ran a six inch wide wheel, with very low air pressure. That is what caused the problem. My co workers said the next fastest C-GAS cars were running 11.50 to 11.60. Since the tunnel ram was so new, I was the only car there that had one. There were lots of people standing around my car back in the pits to get a look at it. Vic Edelbrock was so happy with the way the car ran, It said he would get it fixed ASAP. It was nice to have a big money sponsor. RIGHT ??? To be continued... See more
