Open Letter to the County of San Luis Obispo Government Board of Supervisors, Lynn Compton, Bruce Gibson, Debbie Arnold, and John Peschong for Supervisor: I imp...lore you to heed the call of the League of Women Voters of San Luis Obispo County, CA along with Women's March SLO and vote on November 17th to reverse course and limit the amount of money that can be spent in our local county elections. We must do everything within our power to curb the corrupting influence of money in our politics. As the linked statement below by the League indicates, $25,000 per person is too high and smacks of corruption, or at least indifference, to the reality and severity of this issue. During my 2018 run for County Supervisor, when there were no contribution limits, I made the difficult decision to accept larger campaign contributions. I made that difficult decision because I needed to raise over $300,000 to be competitive, as Board Chair Supervisor Compton had previously fundraised the most money ever in a local Supervisor election. Obviously, I clearly understand that if your Board chooses to implement a much lower limit, it will have a direct impact on my ability to raise money in any future County Supervisor run of mine. Notwithstanding that consideration, I firmly believe that no candidate should be forced to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to be competitive in our local elections. With reasonable limits in place, candidates can spend less time fundraising with big donors and more time engaging with members of our community. Adopting the state’s donation limit of $4,700 will reduce the undue influence of big money in our politics and promote good government that will better serve the citizens of our county. I respectfully request that you do the right thing and keep the limits at no more than the state's limit of $4,700 per person or organization. Thank you. I have a deep and profound respect for all of those engaging in the slow and deliberate process of counting ballots across our country. In 2018, my County Supe...rvisor campaign team watched the San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder's Office do an excellent job counting every vote in a very close race that took weeks to count. Along with our healthcare professionals, emergency responders, and other professionals who have been and are working on the front lines saving lives during lethal spikes in COVID-19, let’s congratulate and extend our gratitude to our ballot counters and clerk’s office staff throughout our county and country who are working overtime under extreme pressure to do the hard work of democracy. Much thanks to our SLO County Clerk-Recorder Tommy Gong and our election workers and volunteers for your hard work! See more
