What’s hyperpigmentation? HP isn’t necessarily a condition but a term that describes skin that appears darker. It can: * occur in small patches * cover large areas * affect the entire body... While increased pigmentation usually isn’t harmful, it can be a symptom of another medical condition. There are several types of hyperpigmentation: * Melasma is believed to be caused by hormonal changes and may develop during pregnancy. * Sunspots. Also called liver spots or solar lentigines, sunspots are common. They’re related to excess sun exposure over time. * Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This is a result of injury or inflammation to the skin. A common cause of this type is acne. What causes hyperpigmentation? A common cause is an excess production of melanin. Melanin is a pigment that gives skin its color. It’s produced by skin cells called melanocytes. Several different conditions or factors can alter the production of melanin in your body. Certain medications can cause hyperpigmentation. The hyperpigmentation is a direct result of an increased level of a hormone in your body that results in increased melanin synthesis. Excessive sun exposure can also cause an increase in melanin. How is hyperpigmentation prevented? It’s not always possible to prevent hyperpigmentation. However, you can protect yourself by: * using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 * wearing hats or clothing that block sunlight * avoiding the sun during the time of the day when it’s strongest, which is typically 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Skin Care. Treating hyperpigmentation can be complicated, because once the melanocytes are damaged it’s almost impossible to reverse. There are certain ingredients in skin care that can help suppress the melanocytes by reducing the appearance of the pigmentation. But even if you reduce the appearance, the pigment may go back to dark if you don’t keep up a consistent regimen of using lightning products, sunscreen, and reducing the time you spend in the sun and heat. Consult a professional to help guide you through this process!

Happy New Year’s my beauties! January is a very popular month to start cleaning out your closet... or your medicine cabinet! How long have you had that eye cream?? Does that sunscreen look chunky? Peeeewwuu! Does that jar of something you can’t remember what it’s for doesn’t smell very good anymore? LET’S DO SOME WINTER CLEANING!... Tips: Check the expiration date. If it’s expired, throw that sucker away. If it doesn’t have a date on it, throw it away if you know that it was purchased over a year ago. That little girl seems really hard on herself, doesn’t she? Just going through her little life looking in the mirror and seeing all her flaws, right? Caring so deeply of what others think of her and what she cannot become. Isn’t that just sad? It would be sad if it were true. This little girl never had these kinds of thoughts. She was probably just thinking about how much fun it is to play dress up, watch cartoons and drink root beer. She didn’t even know others didn’t... like their own appearance. So when did this little girl start saying these things to herself? Was it when another kid in school called her fat? Or when she saw her big sister critique herself in the mirror? Hearing the grownups around her talk about others or themselves in a negative way? Most likely all of the above. Ok, ok, it’s human nature to grow up and care about what others think about us, or wish we had something we didn’t. But if we all know it’s NOT ok to bully others, then when was it ok to start bullying ourselves? Even to this day I see all the things I don’t like about my appearance and unconsciously beat myself up. This negative self talk is detrimental to our self esteem, AND easily picked up by our sons and daughters. How can we change the negative cycle of how we treat ourselves and one-another? I have an idea! I want you all to find a picture of yourself from when you were 2-4 years old. Hold it up in front of you and tell them all the things you would tell your own child. Example: -You are so smart -You are kind -You are beautiful -You are loved -You are funny -You are creative ect. THEN look at yourself in the mirror and say all the things you love about yourself out loud. Ok, this might seem corny, but who cares! I challenge you to do this every day, and especially when you’re feeling down on yourself. It works! I want to live in a world where we treat ourselves and one-another like we should treat our inner child, with love, compassion, and encouragement.
